Bristol Rugby still have room for improvement, says Tom Arscott

Tom Arscott believes Bristol Rugby still have plenty of room for improvement – despite the blistering run that has taken them to the top of the Championship.

Bristol's bonus-point victory at promotion rivals Exeter on Sunday was their seventh league win in a row – and ensured they have taken 34 points from the last available 35.

Their free-scoring form has seen them overhaul Exeter at the top of the table heading into 2010.

But Arscott, who came off the bench to score one of Bristol's tries in Sunday's 25-16 win, does not feel his side are yet the finished article.

"It was important for us to pick our game up after the first few months of the season," said the 22-year-old, who came on as a replacement for his injured brother, Luke.

"We had a couple of losses, which we were disappointed with, and we had to take a good look at ourselves.

"We have kept improving since then – and we're looking to do the same from now until the end of the season. We definitely feel we can keep improving.

"We always knew we had the potential – it was just about putting it together.

"We didn't quite do that in a couple of the early games and it's about keeping our composure now."

Bristol and Exeter have now both lost two league matches this season – but Exeter's have come in their two most recent matches.

Arscott, however, is not reading too much into Bristol's climb to the top of the table.

"Obviously it's good to get the win and go top of the table – but it doesn't really make too much difference," he said.

"Because of how the league is set up this year, it doesn't matter whether you are eighth or first.

"Obviously we wanted to go to Exeter and win – but it doesn't really matter as long as you're in the play-offs. And I expect we'll meet Exeter again before the end of the season."

The sides are on course to meet again in the end-of-season play-offs - the eventual winners of which will be promoted to the Guinness Premiership.

But rather than worrying about the play-offs, Arscott is merely concerning himself with Friday's home Championship clash with Cornish Pirates.

"We wanted to go down there and win - for the points in the league and because they beat us at our place," said Arscott.

"But we're already looking toward the next game and we won't get carried away with being top of the table.

"We're taking our chances at the moment, though, and that's what you have to do, especially against sides like Exeter."
