Bristol Rugby will open their 2012-13 RFU Championship season against one of their biggest rivals in the division.

Liam Middleton's men have been pencilled-in to play defending Championship champions London Welsh at the Memorial Stadium in their opening match – over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, September 1 and 2.

However, the Exiles, who claimed the title with an aggregate win over Cornish Pirates last month, are awaiting the outcome of an appeal against the decision to deny them promotion to the Aviva Premiership.

Should they be successful in their bid to overturn the decision and take up residency at Oxford United's Kassam Stadium next season, then Newcastle Falcons would be relegated from the top tier of English rugby and would most likely take over the fixtures assigned to London Welsh.
