Jason Spice has called for an instant response from his Bristol Rugby players when they kick off their Championship play-off campaign against Cornish Pirates on Friday.

The Championship table-toppers suffered their first league defeat since October when going down 30-25 at Moseley on Saturday.

The shock loss brought the club's 13-match winning run – their best in the professional era – crashing to a halt.

But playing captain Spice is well aware that there is no time to dwell on the loss at Moseley, as Pirates visit the Memorial Stadium on Friday in the promotion play-off opener.

"We've got to pick ourselves up reasonably quickly and get back to how we have been playing," said the scrum-half.

"We've been training reasonably hard, but we didn't complete our set-pieces very well at the weekend and we didn't have quite the same amount of commitment as them.

"To go 10-0 down pretty much straight away was a good indication of the disparity between the two teams.

"But hopefully we'll kick on now. It's just one of those things – we let ourselves down a little bit and found it hard to claw it back – but it's a whole different ball-game come Friday."

The loss at Billesley Common against ninth-placed Moseley carried echoes of Bristol's 26-22 defeat at Doncaster in October – the result that sparked the recent lengthy winning run.

But Spice says his team are much better now than they were when losing at Castle Park.

"Saturday was a bit of a throwback to the early part of the season, which is obviously disappointing," he said.

"But we're not quite in the same situation as we were after Doncaster – we're not hitting the panic button. Hopefully it's just a minor blip in the season.

"We've been playing well up to now and we've got to get a bit more aggression at the start of games and continue from there.

"We gave away needless penalties, and that's something that hampered our side at the start of the season and something we'll address very quickly."

Bristol are hoping to have lock Roy Winters (ankle) and centre Sam Giddens (hamstring) available for Friday's match against Pirates, who finished sixth in the Championship.
