Bristol Rovers have completed the signing of recently-released Tranmere Rovers central defender Mark McChrystal.

The former Northern Ireland U21 captain, 28, began his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but following a loan spell at Bradford, was released and went on to sign for his home town club Derry City. He also played for Partick Thistle and Lisburn Distillery before joining Tranmere in January 2011.  McChrystal has been out-of-favour at Prenton opark this season, however, and has only managed to play three times during a recent short loan spell at Scunthorpe.

"I worked with Mark when he was a young player at Wolverhampton Wanderers, so I know a bit about his character, and I have followed his career from afar," said Rovers' boss John Ward. "The timing was great because Mark became available as Cian Bolger had to return to his parent club.

"He is an experienced player now and he will add strength, power and knowledge to our back line. Also, while he was at Scunthorpe United he played in front of Steve Mildenhall, so there is an understanding between them.

"Mark is a typical centre half who will defend and head the ball, and wears his heart on his sleeve. He is ready to play for the cause, and even though he is only here for the short term, he knows that if everything goes well it could turn into something longer."
