I know that it's only the start of a new campaign, but you just can't help thinking about what sort of season lies ahead.

The loss of Rickie Lambert – and his 29 goals from last year – was something which had me and a lot of other supporters worried. How can you replace such an obvious commodity as a proven goal-scorer?

You can buy a replacement – not really on the cards for Rovers at the moment.

You can hope that a replacement emerges from the Academy – and young Ben Swallow is looking promising in that department. Or you can change the way that you play to try to ensure that goals don't come from just one source. And I think Paul Trollope and Lennie Lawrence are working towards that way of thinking. We saw after Lambert's departure that Rovers were no loner going to just search out a big striker to retain possession.

And that process continued again on Saturday as Bristol Rovers players to a man put in a really good 90-minute display against one of the sides tipped for promotion from Division One into the Championship come the end of the season.

Here was a side that knew that they had to work hard for each other if they were going to get anything out of the match. And from the very first whistle Rovers were in the faces of their Yorkshire opposition to such an extent that Huddersfield barely forced a meaningful shot on Foster's goal. The first penalty missed by Chris Lines was a shock and probably had more to do with the fact that Lambert was the recognised taker. But Hughes really did well to keep his nerve and beat Smithies for the winner.

Let's hope the new found confidence continues for this week's Carling Cup game.
