This is Bristol

Bristol Rovers fan Dennis Payter: I can recall how we were once 4-0 down at half-time to a Jack Charlton-led Leeds United before staging an incredible fightback to get a draw.

That miraculous recovery in 1960 was led by Bristolians Doug Hillard and Alfie Biggs, but a draw was never on the cards against Leeds last week because of the shocking difference in class in one of the most one-sided games I have seen.

You need players to get stuck in when the going gets tough and we were well led by captain Stuart Campbell, but if he had looked back over his shoulder he would have discovered there was no one behind him and that he was on his own.

It would be churlish to criticise too many individuals that night because the team was outplayed. But the hangover we carried from the Yeovil game was a lack of confidence, which showed with too many bad first touches and the way we sat back as we did against Yeovil once we scored.

Each time we lost the ball we retreated too quickly to the edge of our own penalty area and were too slow to get out of there when we did get possession.

Also disappointing was the way our forwards failed to hold the ball up and were easily out-muscled. Some Gasheads had claimed we would not miss Rickie Lambert, but how we could do with him now.

It was significant that Chris Dickson was dropped at MK Dons. I feel the honeymoon period is over with him, at least we don't need a costly divorce and we can dispatch him back to Charlton.

We need to spend some of that Lambert transfer money on a striker, even on loan player who can hold the ball up and feed Jo Kuffour, along with a midfielder who will get stuck in as I am still not sure about Blizzard. In defence, let's hope Danny Coles is soon going to make a return.

When you are on a bad run you get the sort of harsh penalty decisions that went against us at MK Dons and, although we showed an improvement on the last week, we still lost.

Now, thankfully, we can forget about the league for a week and look forward to welcoming back Rickie and a fascinating cup-tie against the Saints. They will be out for revenge for our win last month, not to mention that famous fifth-round win two years ago. It is vital we win or our season could be over before Christmas.

Let's hope we can put last month behind us and show some of the spirit Doug and Alfie displayed on that memorable night at Eastville.
