“It is the first time in my career I have won anything like this, but hopefully it is the first of many and I can keep doing well.

“Being Captain has upped my game a lot, but I have always tried my best in every game, and now I am just hoping to keep the boys going and get three points against Wycombe on Saturday.”

Chairman Nick Higgs said: “I am delighted for Tom as he thoroughly deserved this award.

“He has done a fantastic job coming in as captain, and we all believe he has a long and very bright future at the club.”

However, John Ward did not win the manager of the month award, missing out to Gillingham boss Martin Allen.

The two awards are determined by two separate expert panels.

The Manager of the Month award is decided by former Charlton Athletic manager Alan Curbishley, Football League Chief Operating Officer Andy Williamson, League Managers Association Deputy CEO Olaf Dixon and npower Partnership and Sponsorship Manager Katy Thomas.

The Player of the Month panel sees Katy Thomas joined by Wolves legend Don Goodman, BBC Sport’s Mark Clemmit and The Football League’s Head of Communications, John Nagle.

Commenting from npower, Partnership and Sponsorship Manager Katy Thomas added: “It was clearly a very happy start to the year for both winners.

"It's been another fantastic month to be a Gillingham fan as they show no signs of slowing down in the race for promotion, while Tom Parkes' defensive heroics ensured that there is still hope for Bristol Rovers at the other end of the table.”

“Tom is still a bit raw which is understandable given his age however there is a fantastic player in there. I believe he has the attributes with hard work and determination to rise through the leagues and play in the premier league and maybe England one day. Hope he stays with us for a bit longer first though.”

“Very pleased that Tom Parkes has deservedly won the Player of the month award for January. You are definitely an inspiration to the whole team and LONG may it continue. Like Roversteve said, the togethernes and proper Rovers spirit has been missing for many years.
Pleased in a way that John Ward has not, at this stage won the Manager of the month award, because as many have said.....those who have won it, usually find that their team go on a bad run immediately afterwards. Hope he wins it in April.

Keep it up 'GAS' lets all pack the Mem tomorrow and give the amazing backing to the Rovers team again.....the crescendo when the winning goals have been scored lately is extremely heart warming.

    UP THE GAS.”

“Well done Tom,you've been a breath of fresh air at the heart of Rovers defense with your committed yet composed performances. You always look to bring the ball down and play from the back with the odd flash of cheeky skill that leave opposition forwards bemused in your path. I have to say though that you are one of many players that have blossomed since the exit of MM and arrival of JW,long may you all continue to improve and always play for the shirt.I am sure I am speaking for all Rovers supporters in saying this and the spirit surrounding the Club again, that was sadly missing for years, yes, years,is now back with a vengeance. Well done again.”

“Huge congratulations to Tom . He fully deserves it. A pity Jon was not crowned manager of the month as well, but it is usually the kiss of death, so probably for the best! Keep it up guy's you are doing our club proud.”
