BRISTOL Rovers boss Mark McGhee made good on his promise to add two new strikers to his squad before Saturday's trip to Exeter City after completing deals to sign Derek Riordan and Tom Eaves.

McGhee has offered former Celtic striker Riordan, capped three times by Scotland, a short-term deal until Christmas, while Bolton youngster Eaves, 20, has agreed an 93-day emergency loan deal.

Riordan was signed as a free agent after leaving St Johnstone following a short spell at the end of last season and has since trained with Championship club Blackpool, League One side MK Dons and, most recently, Scottish Premier League new boys Ross County.

He has a good scoring record over two spells with Scottish Premier League club Hibernian – 90 in 225 games – and has also played for Celtic and Chinese club Shaanxi Chan-Ba.

However, Riordan is dealing with some off-field problems and is expected to stand trial after appearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court earlier this month to face charges of breach of the peace and using anti-homosexual language to door staff at an nightclub in the Scottish capital on May 7. He earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail. The case has been adjourned until October 9, when the trial is expected to begin.

Eaves, meanwhile, arrives from Bolton in a bid to get games under his belt after a year-long absence due to a knee injury.

The 20-year-old has yet to start a senior league game, but impressed during 15 appearances off the bench for Oldham in the 2009-10 season.

He scored a hat-trick against Bolton in a pre-season friendly the summer before last and was signed by Owen Coyle a few weeks later – but has yet to feature. Both players will go into the squad for Saturday's trip to St James' Park.

“The way I see it, he's a bit of a scally, doesn't bust a gut, but has the talent. Just seen some of his goals on You Tube, so some of that will do fine. If MM can get him firing he should be too good for L2 defenders. Lets just hope he wants it.”

“Hi Old Frank ! Nice of you to remember me ! That team of 60 years ago was built around a strong character like Ray Warren, a great captain as well as a great centre half. He was helped by Jackie Pitt at right half and the team was kept amused in the dressing room by Ginger Roost, the Nobby Stiles of his day and Bert Hoyle the goalie who loved playing up to the fans at Eastville and was bombarded with oranges before the match, which he carefully stacked at the back of his goal to eat at half time !. We were lucky then because it was a TEAM. And in charge was Bert Tann probably the best Manager that Rovers ever had. Today's Rovers are just a bunch of journeymen who hardly know each other but as others say you have to give them a chance. What riles me and many others is the way Rovers have let all their best players go in recent years and then seen them do even better afterwards, Lambert in particular as well as Jason Roberts. Anyway let's cheer them on tomorrow. 60 years ago it was a 0-0 draw ......

“If you think I'm depressed Steve how do you think Eliot Richards must feel ?

Just a few weeks ago Eliot was told he was being given a chance after James Constable refused to sign. Has he been given a chance ? I don't think so. If Rovers fans say "it's early days for the manager you've got to give him time" doesn't that apply to Eliot as well ?

Sorry if it hurts to hear it but Mark McGhee is now thrashing about desperately to try and stop himself and Rovers becoming the laughing stock of football. The season is only a few weeks old and already we are begging clubs to loan us players and now signing another Scottish player who's life is evidently in a mess and who has trained with a number of British clubs this summer but who no one wanted.

Players like Richards, Hunter, Clarke, Goddard and Staley should be given a chance because they are 18 or 19 now and if they are going to make it they need to be given experience as other teams do with their youngsters. Alongside them we need good honest pro's as we had with Steve Elliott, Richard Walker, Stuart Campbell, Craig Disley and other decent characters rejected by Rovers in recent years. I am not averse to bringing in young players like Norburn and Clucas but the balance has to be right.

Tony Ireland will remember Geoff Bradford and Harry Bamford, I remember Doug Hillard and Bobby Jones, for others it will be Lindsay Parsons and Stuart Taylor or for comparative youngsters :) Phil Purnell and Geoff Twentyman. A side is built around character and it is shameful that in their desperate plight McGhee and Higgs are panicking and bringing in any Tom, Dick or Harry who will come to try and save their face.”

“Old Frank, how I wish you'd find another Club, got to be the most depressed Rovers supporter I've know and there has been quite a few.....perhaps a short term deal across at Ashton with a chance of a longer stay if you depress enough!”

“Thats right Old Frank. Players like Ellington, Jason Roberts Barry Hales and Lambert. We gambled and they came off. There is no real risk here because the deal is only for 3 months. but if it comes off then we are laughing.

    Give the guy a chance.”
