Bristol Phoenix Under-15s out for another trophy
Bristol Phoenix Under-15s will be looking to add another piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet this weekend.
After claiming the ICC International Cricket Centenary Celebrations Europa Cup in May, the girls' team added the Lady Taverners' South West Regional title to their honours board.
They now tackle the best from this country in the national finals, being held at Elsmere, in Shropshire, on Sunday.
"We are very proud of them," said Mike Collett, one of the coaches at Bristol Phoenix.
"The girls are a fantastic team. They have no superstars from the eight- a-side team. They tend to share out the runs.
"In the regional finals, they played five matches and won them all, but in each game it was a different girl that did the best."
The Phoenix Under-13 side just missed out on a place at the national finals.
After beating Finchampstead by 70 runs thanks to Amber Day and Megan Webb hitting 20 before retiring, they came unstuck in the semi-finals.
But the girls' teams are thriving thanks to being able to play competitive cricket against boys in the Bristol & District Youth Leagues.
Collett added: "They do really well but they are slightly over-aged in the Bristol & District League, as that is what the ECB rules allow.
"Let's put it this way, they have won as many matches as they have lost, but it is a great experience for them.
"They are getting competitive matches. Credit must go to the Bristol & District Youth League for being foresighted." Bristol Phoenix were formed last winter from the girls' and women's sections from Chipping Sodbury, Shirehampton and Thornbury clubs.
They run two senior sides and three youth teams at Under-13, Under-15, and Under-17 age-groups.
They are on the look-out for new players of any ability and the next taster session will be at Chipping Sodbury CC on Saturday, September 12 (10am).
Further information can be obtained from Collett on 07778 8195488.
"We are hoping to establish ourselves as a base for girls in Bristol and South Gloucestershire to come and develop their cricket," added Collett. "The first team play in the regional championships, coming up against teams such as Weston, Bath and Bournemouth."
