The national flag of Pakistan was raised at the Mansion House in Bristol to mark Pakistani Independence Day and celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Pakistan.

Bristol's Deputy Lord Mayor Brenda Hugill was guest of honour at the Lord Mayor's official residence and joined other civic dignitaries and representatives of the Pakistani community in Clifton to celebrate the contribution they make to the city.

Alongside speeches, there was Pakistani food, music and videos.

Event organiser Munawar Gondal said that it was very important to mark Pakistani Independence Day in Bristol.

He said: "Being a Pakistani abroad, it's very important for us to celebrate our national day. We remember all the history while also wishing prosperity for the future."

Mr Hugill said: "The Pakistani community make a very important contribution to Bristol and I am very honoured to have been invited to share their culture with them on this very special day in their history."

A further celebration organised by the Pakistan Association of Bristol was due to take place tomorrow afternoon at the Bristol Hotel in Prince Street.
