MPs from the Bristol area have handed back more than £3,500 they had claimed in expenses, Parliamentary files have revealed.

Following widespread public fury as the heavily blacked-out documents charting every claim made by each of the 646 Westminster politicians were released last week, the names of those who have made repayments has now been published.

It shows Woodspring MP Liam Fox has made two payments totalling £2,638.50 since April, accounting for well over half of the funds repaid by local MPs.

One payment, for £1,401, covered the service charge on the Tory shadow defence secretary's London flat, which he had submitted twice in 2005.

The second, for £1,237.50, covered the "routine realignment" of his variable mortgage interest. He made standard monthly claims but worked out the actual amount of interest at the end of the year and handed over the difference.

Kingswood's Roger Berry repaid £410 he claimed on his Incidental Expenditure Provision, which covers office costs, for an insurance bill.

He said: "I consulted the fees office and they ruled this was a legitimate claim. Having looked again at all of my claims, I have concluded this might not be the best value for the tax payer.

"It is an insurance policy that would cover the cost of revenue investigations into office costs."

Northavon's Steve Webb handed back £62 after looking at last year's claims, which have not been published yet, and realising he had claimed for an extra month of council tax, which is collected in 10 instalments.

He said: "I checked the figures at the end of the year and realised I had claimed for 11 months instead of ten."

Bristol East's Kerry McCarthy repaid £402 after finding an item on her second homes allowance that she was unable to identify.

At the time of the repayment she said: "I recall that there were significant problems getting Habitat to deliver the furniture and I remember being in a position where the new parliamentary session was about to start and I still did not have a bed in the flat.

"I can only assume that the bed I originally ordered was out of stock and another order was placed, but as this was four years ago I am not sure.

"In view of that error on my part I have spoken to the Fees Office, which has accepted repayment of £402."

The records show Weston-super- Mare MP John Penrose has repaid £79.99. He was not available for comment.
