Meat eaters should consider the impact flatulent cows have on the environment when choosing what to have for dinner, a city MP was set to tell Parliament on Wednesday.

Gas emitted by livestock, as well as the vast swathes of land needed to grow their feed, means they account for 18 per cent of greenhouse gases, according to Kerry McCarthy.

The Bristol East MP – who as a vegan eats no animal produce – has secured a Westminster Hall debate to raise awareness about the impact of the livestock industry on climate change.

She believes that the effects of meat production must be looked at, as well as the environmental fall-out from regional airports.

Ms McCarthy said: "It sounds like a joke but flatulent and burping cows do have an impact on greenhouse gases."

It comes on the back of a report by Friends of the Earth called What's feeding our food? that shows the environmental cost of imported soy to feed chickens, pigs and other livestock.

The group wants the government to support small UK farmers to help them to produce home grown animal feeds.

“I think there is so much hypocrisy around this meat versus vegetarian debate. I would like to see some clear evidence that meat eating is more damaging to the environment than veganism. Vegetarians, of course, eat eggs, cheese and milk and so rely on animals for these. I you examine a typical, say vegan, diet I suspect that much of their protein sources have come from abroad, ie. by ship, road or 'plane. Things like tofu, lentils, pulses, and many grains such as rice are shipped from abroad. If we returned to the old 'cottage gardens' of pre industrial revolution times we could all, in theory, survive by growing a variety of fruit, veg. and keeping chickens, pigs, a sheep or cow for milk etc. But without any livestock? Would this be possible?Instead of 'splitting hairs' I believe we should be doing what we can individually and collectively to produce what we can locally. Start with small steps, like supporting your local veg. box scheme. Be supportive towards anyone trying to change and improve things, whether they are vegetarian, vegan or omnivores and don't get into all this point scoring and holier than thou stuff.”

“But is any governemnt going to tackle that? Of course not as every woman in the country would say its their Human Right to have as many offspring as they want.

C'mon Paul try a little harder and you could be REALLY offensive. And there was me thinking that misogyny had no part in a civilised society

I take it from your statement that you believe all babies are immaculately conceived.
Back in the real world Men have just as much say in whether a child is conceived as women. If they don't want a child use a condom.. Simple as that. Please don't blame woman just because by an accident of their birth they are the ones who carry, give birth to and bring up children because many men are too selfish/immature/irresponsible to play their part.

It is all to easy to blame woman for something that is the responsibility of both sexes. Remember for every single mum there is an absent father but I don't hear you castigating them”

“I wonder if anyone has informed this excuse for a politician that she is being rascist? of all the ridiculous 'isms', laws and PC garbage this government has churned out against common sense and the British people, she now intends to cause insult by suggesting that the cow, which to Hindus is a holy animal, should be somehow removed as it bothers her that these animals are contributing to the planets downfall!
Small minded politicians only get you small minded politics!”

“There are a number of things this aricle raises. Firstly we all know there are too many people in the world, dare I say in this country too? But is any governemnt going to tackle that? Of course not as every woman in the country would say its their Human Right to have as many offspring as they want. Of course if the Government stopped paying people to have more and more children that would also work.
As for global warming, well Greenland is still 80% covered in ice, so why is it called Greenland? Well in the 8th Century the Vikings went there to farm, because it was Green Land, and the Romans grew grapes as far north as Stoke on Trent, something we cant do today. To me "Going Green" is about 90% raising taxes and 10% improving our quality of life. What I dont want though is to be preached to at every opportunity, by those who think such statements will impress me. Two other things that no one tells you is that the SEA gives off more C02 than human activity, and the other is; even if we went totally Carbon neutral, it would affect less than 1% of the worlds Global Greenhouse Gas output.

No one in Government says that openly do they?”
