Bristol MP Kerry McCarthy seeks crackdown on rogue landlords
Bristol East Labour MP Kerry McCarthy has accused the Government of failing to protect tenants in privately-rented accommodation from rogue landlords.
Ms McCarthy is worried that as the private sector continues to expand, tenants are now facing a lack of security, poor quality accommodation and record rents.

She said this combination puts families and young people living in Bristol under considerable pressure.
In Bristol, private rents have risen 4.1 per cent over the past year, with 60,000 households reported to be renting privately in the city.

She said: "In cities like Bristol, families and young people are becoming increasingly squeezed by increasing rents and they have little security in terms of tenancy agreements. The Government cannot go on ignoring this problem. Renting privately has to be fair for both the tenant and the landlord. I know from attending the Housing Benefit Poverty Hearing in Bristol, that tenants have had enough of rip-off fees from letting agents, instability from landlords and ever rising rents."

“I really think it's time Ti Bristol changed the photograph they keep using to promote Bristol East Labour MP Kerry McCarthy. . Landlords certainly aren't allowed use misleading photographs of properties they have for sale or rent, and you certainly aren't allowed to sell horse meat as beef or mutton as lamb. .”

“rouge landlords, most business men with political coats on. lets get to grips with people like Kerry Mcarthy, expenses through the roof, claiming housing allowance far greater than these rouge landlords, clean up your own backyard before trying to clean up someone else's. and just to put your minds at ease, i am no a landlord or have a political axe to wave towards k mcarthy, i think all mps are rubbish”

“'Rogue' landlords scamming housing benefit do what they do because of the stupidity of the law, same as scrounging asylum seekers and economic migrants. Interest rates have been held artificially low for years and our so called immigration policy is 'let everyone in'. No wonder it's a horrible mess, and please Bristol East voters - get rid of this horrible harridan.”

“Rogue landlords not encouraged by Housing Benefit expenditure having doubled in the past 10 years under a Labour government then Kerry. From £11 billion in 1999/2000 to £20 billion in 2009/10, in cash terms.”

“@ Brennus..Your audience may have, but, unfortunately some of us have to work on into the night. Some of us have people relying on them, to get work to them, before they start again in the morning.”

“@Brennus, I really can't be bothered to explain the problems with the housing market at present....and who exactly said anything about a catastrophic collapse in the housing market.....apart from you that is!!!!?????????
Many of us are in the very fortunate position of home ownerships. Some of us are even trying to provide homes for the less fortunate.
Oh and you still can't change me into a gentleman no matter how hard you try.
Retired.....mmm....now that's a thought. Too many people reliant on me unfortunately.
....and there you go about Somerset again and Walter. Do you suffer from phobias also?”

“So, 'EireneRose' - why hasn't there been a colossal collapse in the housing market?
You quite clearly don't know what you're talking about. Seriously, how wrong can you be?
I wasn't being smug, I was simply giving a real world example of the plain fact that many people can comfortably buy property. Some can't, some can. Your sweeping generalisation was clearly wrong.
I'm not interested what you do for a living - although you are more than likely a retired gentleman living in Somersetshire, eh Walter?”
