Brenda Hugill – Lord Mayor of Bristol in 2001-02 – has been chosen as current first citizen Chris Davies' next deputy.

Councillor Hugill, 66, is expected to take over from the present Deputy Lord Mayor, Royston Griffey (Lab, Hartcliffe), in June.

She was chosen at a selection panel meeting earlier this week, where Councillor Davies (Lib Dem, Knowle) was voted Lord Mayor for a second year running.

Mrs Hugill told the Post: "I am delighted to be nominated as Deputy Lord Mayor.

"It will be an honour to represent the city once again and I look forward to supporting the Lord Mayor in his role.

"I hope to use the opportunity to help support those citizens in our communities who make a big difference but whose work often goes unsung."

Labour councillor Hugill faces the voters in her Lawrence Hill ward in the local elections on June 4.

The mother-of-four has been on the council since 1998 and had a majority of 443 at the last poll in 2005.

Born in Nottingham, she first came to Bristol aged 18 to study for her teaching qualifications at Redland and St Matthias Colleges.

She has lived here ever since, teaching at schools in the area including Eastville Girls and Pen Park, Southmead.

“As Brenda Hugill has already been Lord Mayor, why couldn't the post of Deputy Lord Mayor have gone to someone who hasn't done it yet. She could potentially become Lord Mayor next year. Give someone else a chance.”
