Fall is a blow to May
Title-holder Andrew Gillett, from Port Talbot in South Wales, was top points scorer in the opening round of the Remedies Bar Motocross Series at Little Silver, near Exeter, on Sunday.
He won the first and third of the three ten-lap races, although he was beaten by Bristol challenger John May in the second clash.
May could have come out on top but for a fall at the first turn in the final race.
The two swapped positions several times in the early stages of the first race until May took a sixth-lap tumble, which gave Gillett the room he needed to take victory.
May was first away in the second race, but he lost the advantage to Gillett halfway through the first lap. However, he was back in front by the end of the fourth circuit.
After his final race spill, May fought back but Gillett won by ten seconds.
With two wins and a third place, Ivybridge youngster Will Worden was top scorer in the 125cc class, which was run with the experts.
British sidecar trial champions Jon Tuck and Matt Sparks, from Compton Greenfield, took the lead for the first time in the current series when they won the South Birmingham Club's DK Mansell Trophy event at Lydbury North, near Craven Arms in Shropshire.
Ricky Wiggins was a clear winner of the Frome Club's Wyndham Haines Trophy.
