Bristol Hippodrome rocked by Queen musical
After a seven-week run in which it played to more than 90,000 people, the touring production of We Will Rock You has come to an end at the Hippodrome in Bristol.
The Queen musical has been one of the theatre's most successful shows ever since it opened on September 16.
At its gala opening night the following evening, Brian May appeared on stage for the encore of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Hippodrome manager Gary Roden said that the musical has become a cult show, with some fans seeing it up to eight times.
The number of patrons through the door over seven weeks to see the Ben Elton written play was 90,593.
Mr Roden said that he was expecting the show to be a big success, but that it exceeded all expectations.
He said: "It has been phenomenal. The show has done well across the big cities it has been to and we are over the moon with how it has performed in Bristol.
"The feedback from the audience has been amazing. We expected it to be huge, just not this big. I saw it twice, including on the last night, and it was fantastic.
"It's one of those shows that you cannot help but get excited about. In the current climate, you do worry whether you will still get people through the door, but this shows that people still want to be entertained.
"Promoters love bringing their shows to the Hippodrome because we can pull in audiences from Bristol and across the South West."
Over the last 24 hours, Hippodrome staff have been working around the clock to transform the stage for Giselle, an English National Ballet production that opens later this evening.
