The Evening Post has always prided itself on being a campaigning newspaper.

In fact, we were the Newspaper Society's Campaigning Newspaper of the Year in both 2004 and 2005 and this year we have led a successful campaign to save Portishead's open-air pool.

Previous campaigns have included us successfully fighting to bring Concorde home to Filton and saving the historic cemetery at Arnos Vale for the people of Bristol after a developer planned to build thousands of homes on the land.

Roger Whitfield, a leading member of the Save the Open Air Pool group, said he doubted that without the Evening Post's campaign, the pool would have been saved.

He said: "The campaign that we fought was a long and hard one, and the Evening Post really was instrumental in its success.

"Heather Pickstock (the Evening Post's North Somerset reporter) has almost been a part of our team all the way through.

"She knows all about the local people and the local area and without her and the Evening Post's help, I think we would have lost the pool."

Heather Pickstock added: "In any campaign such as this, it is vital for a local reporter to be a real part of the community and take an interest in every itch and scratch of the fight, whether it be reporting meetings about the issue or joining protest marches.

"The pool is an iconic feature of Portishead and it's fantastic that the local community and the Evening Post were successful in saving it from closure so it can be enjoyed by future generations.

"The campaign is a real example of how the local community and local newspapers can work hand in hand to get the right result."

Last year, we reflected the wishes of the people of Keynsham who were outraged when Cadbury announced that they were to close their Somerdale factory.

Although we were unable to convince the food and drink giants not to move production to Poland, our campaign galvanised the local community.

It is not just large-scale campaigns, however, that feature in the pages of the Evening Post.

Our readers regularly contact us for help on consumer issues, and we are often able to help, securing refunds or apologies from businesses or local councils.

Our readers also enjoy taking advantage of the numerous promotions that we run throughout the year.

Currently, 'Kids go free' tokens are appearing each day. These tokens enable readers to take their children free of charge to 61 family attractions across the South West.

These include Horseworld in Whitchurch, Court Farm Country Park in Weston-super-Mare, Babbacombe Model Village in Torquay and Bristol Packet boat trips, which run cruises on the Avon from Avonmouth to Bath.

● The Evening Post has been Bristol's sole paid-for daily newspaper since the demise of the Evening World, which was published for the last time on April 2, 1960.

● The Evening Post is no longer simply a newspaper. Our website, www.thisisbristol.co.uk, features constantly updated news and video and had almost 340,000 visitors last month, a record number.

● This year will be the 31st Evening Post carol concert at the Colston Hall, which raises money for the Lord Mayor's Christmas Appeal for Children.

“I wonder if the person who wrote this article really believes this? I have to say in reply that the Evening Post seems only interested in slagging off anything new, pouring cold water on innovation and sickly 'good news' stories from 'safe' communities and places - rather like Portishead. It is a paper sadly lacking in real content of real news from real Bristolians. Get a grip before you die BEPP! And stop slapping yourself on the back - it's creepy!”

    “Campaigning?
I thought you were an advertising paper, happy to advertise anything in the form of a news article.

Must be due another article on those overly expensive flats in bristol city centre, surely.”

“No guns, but yes the talk is really quite shocking on the lines of the previous president of the USA, idiocy . No you don't have to listen, but the price to get in is shocking and would you be defending this if what was being spouted was communism or socialism as 'fact' to a audience of manly children I hope so. They do get an awful amount of free publicity for what is a profit making business. That I feel is not fare on the rest of the attractions in the area which are a lot cheaper to visit with large families as I have.”

“What lunacy would that be then, Steven? I've been and no-one forces you to sit through their 'talks', or forces you to read the notices that are scatered about. Unless the men with guns were on a day off when I went.”
