Bristol City's attempts to exit the npower Championship relegation zone met with frustration as their Boxing Day fixture against Watford was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch at Ashton Gate.

There was no sign of what was to come when the players were warming up on the pitch, but the heavens opened at 2.45pm as torrential rain returned to the West Country.

Match referee Michael Naylor took the decision to delay kick-off by 15 minutes while ground staff attempted to clear water off the playing surface.

But another sudden downpour ended hopes of the game going ahead and Mr Naylor called it off at 3.10pm after consulting with City boss Derek McInnes and Watford manager Gianfranco Zola.

Frustrated supporters booed the decision when it was announced, but the referee had no alternative.

The postponement leaves the Robins in the drop zone and McInnes and his playersmust now prepare for Saturday's crucial home relegation battle against Peterborough United.

“Would I be wrong in thinking that McInnes and Coyle are thick as thieves anyway from their time at St Johnstone? Would we not be getting more of the same if Coyle came in? I suppose he is higher profile and if he came in to work with McInnes in some capacity it might work - he could have some decent contacts.

I like the post today which says Derek wants to put a smile on the fans faces. Some would say you can do that quite easily - tear up your contract a la the Ashton Gate 8 and leave with Tony 'Get the Champagne in' Doc and the other hangers-on....”

“It's just a thought but.....Look at recent events at Ewood Park and the City Ground: Henning Berg and Sean O'Driscoll have both been sacked from clubs which are infinitely better-placed than City ie Blackburn and Forest are within a three-or-four-match-winning-run of establishing a serious promotion challenge....yet they STILL sack their manager.

Now,THAT is a measure of the kind of ambition which we should be employing!

McInness....you are either a lucky man...or perhaps you are part of a wider Machiavellian plan which involves downsizing our ambitions, the club, the squad? No one appears to knows what is going on....apart from You-Know-Who!”

    “@Red_Emerson:

Can you explain HOW SL could "walk away" from money he owes himself?

The end of season plan may well be to exchange debt for equity which would mean he'll own more of the club.

    @ royaljoe:

Wrong again.Attendances, now, are higher that those when we got promoted from League One and so are ST Sales.

I can assure you, SL, DOES NOT, want to go down! We could get Coyle tomorrow, mate. He's unemployed because Bolton fired him when he had an identical record to us!”

“Despite BCFC just being a hobby for SL, he will have an agenda.

Not so sure of his future plans, for supporting the club anymore, maybe relegation would be a good opportunity, to walk away!”

“The biggest difference from the early 80's one Steven Lansdown , from 67-80 there was the occasional days when you were more than happy being BCFC supporter i could write a list as long as your arm to prove my point.”

    “@JohnJames:

Blackburn fans hated Keane from day one as they felt he had stabbed Allardyce in the back.Blackburn persevered but he was a dead man walking even after they made a good start so they brought in Henning Berg-Cheer up.Things coud be worse said that retard Shevey Singh-Ans dure enough-THEY DID GET WORSE-FAR WORSE and today, Berg's been sacled after 57 days in the job-No doubt with a wacking great pay off and who do they want?

The guy that couldn't hack it at Man City & QPR?

Meanwhile, the bloke who'd just beat Leeds ate got our re;egation rivals from last seson to one point off the play offs.................IS ALSO FIRED!!

You couldn't make it up so tell me this, John-If McInnesss goes.........and I'm not saying he shouldn't-Who comes in because it has to happen by next Saturday at the latest due to the Jan Window.

Be careful what you wish for because this was the solution with Millen, wasn't it?

    @CiderheadNott:

I've been supporting the City for exactly the same time as you, I can remmeber plenty, plenty, worse.

    1982?
    Ashton Eight?
    Northampton Away?
    3,000 crowds at AG
    3rd & 4th Div Football
Rovers loaning us players just to make up a team?”

AS ALWAYS SPOT ON WITH YOUR COMMENTS. VERY SINSERE AND A JOY TO READ.
AGES AGO I WROTE THAT SL WOULD NOT MIND GOING DOWN AS THEY HAVE NEER LOOKED LIKE GOING UP. IF THEY GOT IN THE PLAY OFFS OF DIV1 THEY WOULD GET BIGGER GATES THAN EVER. IF I COULD THEN CHOOSE A MANAGER IT WOULD BE OWEN COYLE.”

“I could spend the rest of the afternoon offering suggestions to your questions - I guess we all could as everyone has a different opinion (the beauty of the game). The problem is it doesn't matter what we think - only a handful of people at the club make the decisions that count and us mere fans deal with the consequences.

Whatever division we are in next season we will have to cut our cloth accordingly - but without further financial backing (Lansdown, foreign investor?) then all the big wage earners and assets like Albert will be gone. I can see us relying further on the youngsters and finding out what level they are at - and maybe if McInnes and Co get chucked we will appoint some sort of wheeler-dealer type of manager (Redknapp lite) that can add some shrewd signings and produce something on a shoestring budget. Odd to say it but we might end up with another Gary Johnston - good or bad is for debate!

Celtic did beat Barca in a one-off game on 7th November in front of a manic mass of Glaswegians - two weeks previous to it they lost at home to Kilmarnock and two weeks after it they lost at home to Inverness CT. Even WE beat Killie :-)”
