Bristol City's 5-3 defeat to Blackburn Rovers further highlights the need for manager Derek McInnes to strengthen his defence.

The Scot has been in the market for a commanding right-sided centre-back since the end of last season, missing out on a number of targets, including Richard Keogh, Anthony Gerrard, Garry Monk and Elliott Ward.

Although City have made a better start than in either of the previous two seasons, Saturday's first home defeat suggests all is not as it should be at the heart of the back four.

Liam Fontaine and Louis Carey were too often exposed by the Blackburn frontline of Jordan Rhodes and Nuno Gomes and both were guilty of making wrong decisions.

Given that youngsters James Wilson and Lewin Nyatanga have yet to start a game in the Championship this season and are behind Carey and Fontaine in the pecking order, does McInnes need to bolster his defence in the loan market sooner rather later?

“Cracking game of football, it was one of those games where even though we lost was not too disapointed by the good performance and great entertainment. I thought we played some good stuff against a team on that showing will be back in the Premier league next season. The formation looks much better when playing with two strikers, and thought Baldock and Davies both looked good when they came on. I feel we could be just two central defenders away from being a play off contender, Carey and Fontaine have both been great servants, but unfortunately they are both prone to mistakes and go diving in when they need to stand up, if you are clumsy against the quality of that opposition they punish you. If we are going to compete with teams with PL parachute payments the Chairman might need to dip into his bank account!”

“i agree that it we were weak in central defense, In the last ten minutes both Pearson and Woolford were struggling.Neither managed to get back to defend leaving the back four exposed. With Elliot and Anderson on the bench i felt they should have been introduced in the last few minutes.”

“Assuming we all agree that Blackburn are a top quality side, it's no mean feat to score 3 against them.Obviously Delboy has to fix the defence but if we score that freely (as we have thus far) we are going to be around the mark this season.
No need for panic - COYR”

“The match was thrilling to watch and we were evens at 90 minutes although as many say the centre of our defence shows up our frailties all too often. We should have closed out that game as true professionals do.

They showed great skill and determination to take on Rovers and we can hold our heads up high but for the collapse in the final 5 minutes.

If ever a game CONFIRMED we need to resolve that long standing problem at the centre of our defence then this was it!

Albert was fantastic scoring one and creating another with his amazing ball trickery. To score 3 against an ex England gaolkeeper is great. BUT CONCEDING 5 GOALS tells it's own story!”

“A quality team and in particular, quality strikers, exposed the centre backs for at leat 4 of the 5 goals yesterday.-
This has happened far too often and the messages about tightening in this area have been about for a long time now.Cary is probably one of the best we have but for all his long service and loyalty, is at the twighlight of his career. Fontaine didnt have the best of games yesterday to be fair.
To be fair though, we wont meet many better teams than Blackburn, and the game was one of the most entertaining I have seen there for a long time.We were just on the wrong end of the score.
McInnes is right. We shouldnt need 6 goals to win a game. My greater concern is in away games, where at present, 1 goal has been enough to beat us. There is a huge game already on Tuesday, away at Peterborugh, which we cannot afford to lose if we are realistic about doing well/better this season”

“I think we need two centre backs, one right, one left, so Ward & McManus would work and both are available on loan.

Nyatanga can them go out on loan and Fonts & Carey will be cover.

Nyatanga's played 300 games so can hardly be described as a youngster at 24.It's not Wilson's age it's his experience (30 games) is the issue and it was Fontaine primarily ar fault for goals not Carey!

Blackburns 4th came from their £6m CB and the front men cost over £12m-Our squad didn't cost £8m.”

“The fact Carey is first choice, shows how weak we are, he was only offered a one year deal, on the last home game, of last season.

Having him around, as cover made good sense, but not as first choice!

I know several targets have failed to sign, but surely there is a sensible loan signing of the Caulker mould, in one of the premiership reserve teams!”

“Thought the lads did ok today, trouble is ,a mistake against prem quality of Blackburn costs goals, the need for a winner in defence is obvious for all to see .rhodes 9 million /Gomes 7 million - 4 goals between the two and really defence couldn't get close .we just remember Gomes Scored twice against England.Dont think well be far of this season but must step up hunt for defenders of stature.”
