Bristol City star Maynard has designs on a Golden Boot
Nicky Maynard is setting his sights on finishing as the Coca-Cola Championship's leading scorer.
And Bristol City's ace marksman remains confident he can hit 20 goals in a season for the first time in his career.
Maynard has already won the Championship goal of the year award for 2009 for his Boxing Day strike against QPR and is now intent upon finishing the campaign as the top scorer in the second tier.
But he must first overhaul Cardiff City sharp-shooters Peter Whittingham and Michael Chopra, who have netted 19 and 16 goals respectively in the league - 22 and 19 in total.
Maynard has 16 Championship goals to his name – 17 in all competitions – and is looking to add to his tally in tomorrow's home game against play-off contenders Swansea City.
He said: "I've never managed to get to the 20-goal mark before and that was the target I set myself at the start of the season.
"I managed 19 and 15 in two years at Crewe and then 11 with City last season. There are still four games to come and I know I will get chances in every one of those.
"It's up to me to take them and, if I do, I know I can reach my target. It's the first time I've come out publicly and spoken about the target I've set myself and it would mean a lot if I could achieve it.
"If I get to 20 goals quickly, then I'll push on and try and get as many as I can. The golden boot is something I've thought about and it would be brilliant to end up as the Championship's top scorer."
Unbeaten in five games since Keith Millen took over as caretaker manager last month, City are up to ninth in the table and intent upon beating last season's 10th-place finish.
Maynard said: "It's okay for me to set goal-scoring targets, but the most important thing is for the team to do well.
"We're on a really good run, we're enjoying our football and we want to keep that going until the end of the season."
Millen received a boost today with news that goalkeeper Dean Gerken is less seriously injured than first feared. Carried off towards the end of last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, the former Colchester stopper was taken to hospital with a suspected broken collar bone.
But x-rays have revealed no fracture and Gerken could be available for the trip to Scunthorpe United tomorrow week.
Millen confirmed: "Dean has some bleeding and a lot of bruising in his shoulder, but there is no break. It's great news for us and it's great for Dean himself.
"It means he can still play some part in the season and, if he progresses well next week, he could be in contention for the game at Scunthorpe."
Stephen Henderson, who kept a clean sheet when making his Championship debut at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this week, will again deputise against Swansea.
As expected, City will not be extending Stefan Maierhofer's loan and the Austrian striker will return to Wolves following tomorrow's game.
Millen said: "We were short of numbers when we brought Stefan in, but that is no longer the case. Patrick Agyemang is fit again, John Akinde is back from loan, Nicky Maynard and Danny Haynes are playing well and David Clarkson has played his part recently."
Meanwhile, City have given Yeovil Town permission to keep midfielder Gavin Williams until the end of the season. The Welshman moved to Huish Park for a month initially and Millen said: "We have a lot of competition in midfield, so it makes sense for Gavin to stay where he is and play games."

“I think he is proving to be a bit of a bargain. For someone who has scored some outrageous goals in a team which often fails to create chances is no mean feat.
Any young English striker notching 20 goals in the championship with pace is got to be worth £3-4m in todays market.
Wouldnt be surprised though if the likes of Bolton, Blackburn, Wigan or Birmingham came in with a bid around this mark in the summer.”

“Maynard can score goals no question it is in the approach playb that he needs to improve. He must learn not to wait for the ball to come to him but to move towards the pass. He has his pocket picked to often so must overcome this fault. He is potentially a great player.”

“i know people still think we paid too much for maynard, but considering the potential and his age it wasn't. He will keep getting better as he has this season.”
