Bristol City have agreed the one-month emergency loan capture of Fulham defender Matthew Briggs.

The 21-year-old can operate at left-back, centre-back or on the left wing.

But it will be at full back where Briggs will be challenging for a regular starting place during his month at Ashton Gate.

Richard Foster has switched across from his more orthodox right-back position to fill in recently, after Greg Cunningham and then Wolves loanee George Elokobi suffered long-term injuries.

Academy product Joe Bryan has also played at left-back but was required on the left-wing in midweek versus Burnley, in the same game that Liam Fontaine - another left-back stand-in option - tore a his calf muscle.

Manager Derek McInnes said: "It's common knowledge that injuries have left us short in defence over the past few weeks and we're delighted to get Matthew on board.

"He'll certainly offer us cover at left-back while Greg (Cunningham) gets himself back to full fitness. Greg is making good progress, but he's nowhere near yet.

"We know all about Matthew because we came close to signing him last season. He spent one training session with us but was called back to Fulham because of an injury crisis.

"He did spend time in the npower Championship with Peterborough in the end last season, so has experience of the division.

"Matthew is quick, energetic and hungry. He's a very highly-rated defender who can play in a number of positions and this loan move works for all parties concerned."

Briggs made his Fulham debut in 2007 at the age of just 16, making him the Premier League's youngest player of all time. So far he has made 22 appearances for the Cottagers.

The defender spent brief loan spells with Leyton Orient and Peterborough United.

Briggs has also represented England at youth level from Under-16 to Under-21, with two caps for the latter.

The deal is subject to Football League approval. He has been handed squad number 29.

    “@Burwallian:

Ward was here a month ago and we wouldn't (not couldn't) pay his wages. He wanted less that Hunt or Stewart were earning.

As I said, good signing but if we want to progress the RCB & CM is needed NOW!”

    “Good addition.

Let's just not lose sight of the RCB & CM we need especially as the injuries begin to pile up.I expect Del to go with one up top v Hull and if not then, for the next few away games because we can't go on being a defensive shambles.”
