Crawley Town's decision to allow Claude Davis to join Rotherham United will NOT affect Bristol City's attempts to bring Kyle McFadzean to Ashton Gate.

Experienced defender Davis last night completed a move to the League Two promotion-chasing Millers that sees him team up once more with former Crawley manager Steve Evans.

His departure leaves Reds boss Ritchie Barker short of cover and, given that McFadzean is currently unfit, Joe Walsh and Mark Connolly are now the only central defenders with regular League One experience.

But Barker is resigned to losing McFadzean to the Championship strugglers and is actively seeking defensive replacements in the January transfer window.

City and Crawley have agreed a fee, believed to be in the region of £500,000, for the 25-year-old Yorkshireman and McFadzean has already agreed terms with the Robins.

The only factor delaying the deal is the defender's fitness. Laid low by a serious viral infection in December, McFadzean has been out of action for nearly two months and is yet to return to full training.

City will want assurances that the former Sheffield United trainee has made a full recovery before making a financial commitment and the medical teams at both clubs have been in regular contact to monitor the situation.

Owing to the fact McFadzean will not be able to play straight away, there is no rush to push the deal through.

City have until January 31 to sign McFadzean and an Ashton Gate source today confirmed: "There are no plans for him to travel to Bristol for a medical anytime soon.

"A deal is in place and everything now depends on the player's condition."

“So, as Kyle may not be fit until March 1st, say-What will we do until then because we could well be dead by then.”
