Bristol City's Basso given ultimatum
Bristol City have told transfer-listed goalkeeper Adriano Basso to sort out his future once and for all.
Out-of contract at the end of this season, the 34-year-old Brazilian has steadfastly refused to sign a new deal, despite repeated attempts by chairman Steve Lansdown and first-team manager Gary Johnson to persuade him to stay at Bristol City.

A further meeting between player and chairman is scheduled for this week, but the club is now running out of patience and has issued Basso with an ultimatum.
Although the South American recently won back his place in the starting line-up and played in the last four games, today's Coca-Cola Championship match against Newcastle United at St James's Park could be his last for the Robins unless he withdraws his transfer request and signs a contract extension.
That contract has been on the table for several months and City have ruled out offering Basso more money.
Should talks between Lansdown and Basso fail to resolve the issue during the two-week break for international matches, summer signing Gerken – now recovered from illness – will almost certainly be back between the posts when Peterborough United visit Ashton Gate on Saturday, October 17.
Johnson, who signed Basso from Non-League Woking in 2005, has said publicly that he wants his first-choice keeper to commit his future to City rather than leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.
But the matter is now out of the manager's hands and he must henceforth rely upon Lansdown's powers of persuasion.
He confirmed: "I've done all that I can do to keep Basso at the club. I can do nothing more at this stage.
"Of course, I would much prefer for him to pledge his future beyond this season, but that is now a matter for the player and the chairman. They are continuing to hold meetings, but Basso has now been given a deadline.
"As far as I'm concerned, I'm in a position where I'm waiting for someone to knock on my door and tell me that things have been sorted out one way or another."
Gerken is still not considered fit enough to resume and Basso will again be given the nod at Newcastle. Thereafter, his future at Bristol City is uncertain.

“It's a no brainer.
A goalkeeper who doesn't know if he wants to play for the club and can only commit 75%, or second string who could command a first team place at most other clubs in the championship and would give his life to wear a city shirt.
No player is bigger than the club, ask Sir Alex.”

“Where would Basso be without Gary Johnson and Bristol City?? They both took a chance on him and he produced the goods. Being at City gave him the chance to realise his potential (and that he has) shouldn't he at the very least show the club more loyalty for giving them his chance?? After all, what good is it going to be to have a player in the City ranks trying to engineer a move away whilst he is still playing for the club? As professional as Basso maybe this situation could have a bearing on his mentality in the City goal culminating in half hearted appearences. If this situation was left to fester this is where I think Basso would be. One last ultimatum sounds fair enough to me. I doubt he would not accept a contract at City without having a better offer elsewhere in the pipeline. Seems an odd situation and I look forward to see how this story moves on from here?”

The man is clearly a certified genius.

“Another ultimatum? Again? Why? He is out of contract in the summer of 2010. That is what we are paying for - Basso to play until June 2010. He is the best goalkeeper at the club. Get a grip and leave the bloke alone to get on with his job for gods sake.”
