Recalled Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo insists he retains the desire to become a Premier League regular, having battled for almost a decade to get there.

The targetman has made no bones about his hunger play at the highest level for his parent club Wolves, but knows only good displays and goals while on loan at Bristol City will help him to do so.

Iwelumo has been sent to the Championship club in order to regain full match sharpness after almost a year out injured.

Having helped Wolves win promotion last term, the former Stoke man broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in pre-season and then snapped the bone again in October.

He looks well on the way to his aim, having scored his first goal for City in Sunday's 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion – a strike that also helped earn selection for the Scotland squad yesterday.

"I have been trying to get to the Premier League for the last eight years and it was just disappointing to break it when I did," said the 31-year-old.

"I came back three-and-a-half weeks early and I snapped it against Stoke and reopened it again. But this time it was six weeks without doing anything.

"I am here just for a month. The aim is to play some games. As for the future, I couldn't tell you. We will address it later in the month.

"I am keeping my head down and getting match fitness and, hopefully, I will score a few goals along the way.

"This has been the most frustrating spell of my career. But that is football for you and you have to take it on the chin and put a positive spin on it."

Iwelumo's second half tap-in against West Brom brought up a century of goals for the former Stoke, York, Brighton, Cheltenham and Colchester man.

"I forgot it was my 100th goal and one of the boys reminded me," he said. "I was delighted and it was a good time to get it.

"It has been a long time coming for me. I think I haven't scored since last March, although I have been injured for 10 months."

Iwelumo added: "The most important thing was getting the right result and we justified that. We could have got a few more goals in the second half.

"We definitely deserved three points."

Iwelumo was more than impressed with right winger Danny Haynes and City's top scorer Nicky Maynard, who came on as a late substitute.

"I thought Haynesy was a different class. West Brom couldn't deal with him," he said.

"Nicky is a fantastic player. Obviously I knew of him, but in training he has been awesome.

"I am sure he will develop well. He came on and his touches were sharp and he was hungry for goals and that is what he is all about."

The City squad were given two days off before returning to training tomorrow to begin preparation for Saturday's trip to Ipswich Town.

"The last couple of weeks there has been a good atmosphere among the boys and I am just looking forward to the week ahead after a win," said Iwelumo.

"We have just got to keep doing the right things and I am sure we will keep putting the wins on the board."

Iwelumo and City midfielder Paul Hartley were both named in the Scotland squad for new manager Craig Levein's first game, against the Czech Republic at Hampden Park next Wednesday.

“Just like to add my agreement with Spike. Iwelumo shows just what we have been missing for so long. You'll be welcome to stay for the rest of the season Chris.

And congrats on the Scotland call up (along with Paul Hartley - how does he not get a game?)”

“Chris Iwelumo is a class act - a genuine replacement for Dele Adebola.
We are very lucky to have him at Bristol City for a month.

Feel free to stay longer Chris......”
