Bristol City lead at half-time thanks to Johnson's goal
Half-time: Bristol City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0. Lee Johnson's well-worked goal gave Bristol City the lead at half-time at Ashton Gate.
City boss Gary Johnson had sprang a pre-match surprise when he dropped striker Dele Adebola, saying his mind was "not quite with us".
And the hosts' attacking play was limited in the opening 21 minutes with Marvin Elliott's off-target shot the only effort, with Francis Jeffers forcing a brilliant save from Adriano Basso at the other end.
City went ahead on 25 minutes when Gavin Williams played in Nicky Maynard and Johnson ran onto the ball and slotted home.
Wednesday almost replied straight away but Liam Fontaine's last-ditch tackle on Leon Clarke and a parry from Basso dealt with the danger.
Elliott's back-pass then threatened to put City in danger but Fontaine produced another tackle on the same player when the goal looked at his mercy.
Marcus Tudgay shot over from 25 yards, while for City Williams saw a drive deflected into Lee Grant's arms.
City looked certain to go 2-0 up on 41 minutes when Ivan Sproule looked sure to break through but after a furious scramble that also involved Nicky Maynard, the offside flag was raised.
Wednesday's Dutchman Etienne Esajas then shot over before Michael McIndoe crossed from the left for City and Jamie McAllister just failed to tap in.
