Stephen Henderson insists signing a new contract with Bristol City is only a matter of putting pen to paper.

The young goalkeeper made only his second appearance for the club in Monday's 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town and how he did not claim the man-of-the-match champagne remains a mystery.

Henderson has spent much of his two years at Bristol City as third choice but, with Chris Weale on loan at Yeovil Town, he replaced the injured Adriano Basso after just nine minutes of Bank Holiday Monday's game.

He then produced a clutch of good saves to so nearly earn the Robins a laboured win, before a stoppage-time penalty gave Ipswich a point.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 man has been told he will be offered new terms by manager Gary Johnson.

"I love the club and the lads and it is a matter of just signing it when the time comes," said Henderson.

"The manager has said there is something there and whether it is a year or two years, I will be happy to sign."

The former Aston Villa trainee will now be hoping for his first start in a City shirt at Swansea City on Saturday.

His previous outing was also as a substitute, on the opening day of last season against QPR, when Basso was also injured.

"It was the same as last year," he said. "I didn't have time to think about it because I was amongst it straight away and it was a brilliant experience.

"I was speaking to my mother the other day and we were saying we just didn't think it would happen this season and I wasn't expecting it and then in the third minute that happens. It was great to get on.

"Usually you come on later in the game but as soon as I had sat on the bench I was up straight away.

"I was more ready for this one and it was much better. Hopefully there is more to come."

Henderson dived the wrong way for Giovani dos Santos' penalty but he later revealed he had changed his mind at the last second.

"I was pleased with my contribution and the only thing was that I had it in my head to dive the other way for the penalty and I changed my mind at the last second, so I am a bit gutted but that is how it goes," he said.

"I was surprised he (dos Santos) wasn't starting to be honest, but he changed the game. He was quality. But the result sums up our season. We battled through the game for 90 minutes and that is how football goes.

"The home draws have been costly but we have to battle on and hopefully it will change."

Basso is well known for making rapid recoveries from injury and Johnson has the option of recalling Weale from a spell at Huish Park, where he has conceded once in six games.

Henderson said: "He (Basso) is saying to me that he is fine, so hopefully he will get through this week and we will see how he is at the end of it.

"He is saying he is alright so I will just be working hard. If he is not right I will be ready and if he is I will be cheering him on."

Johnson recalled Weale from a loan spell at Hereford after Henderson's previous first-team appearance.

But at this late stage of the campaign, with the play-offs out of reach, it would be a surprise if Weale is brought back.

City's reserve side contest the final of the Gloucestershire Cup against Cheltenham Town at Ashton Gate on Wednesday (7pm).

A handful of first-team squad players such as Scott Murray, Peter Styvar and Stern John are expected to feature, along with a number of the club's promising Academy graduates.

In the other semi-final Yate Town take on Gloucester City at Cirencester .

Manager Dave Mogg has named six reserve and youth team players in his squad.

“Henderson deserves a start. Basso is top quality but seems to declare himself injured way to easily.”
