Graffiti has been sprayed across the gates of Bristol's Memorial Stadium.

Overnight, tags and slogans were painted across two of the Bristol Rovers' ground entrances, including one on the inscription on the main gates.

The main tag used shows a laurel wreath with the letters "A.D.A" inside it, and the words "Bristol City" underneath.

Foul language has also been sprayed on walls nearby, along with the words "City youth", "BS3" and "CSF" - which stands for City Service Firm, a group associating itself with Bristol City Football Club.

Bristol Rovers Chairman Nick Higgs said: “I am appalled and disgusted that certain individuals find it necessary to desecrate an important War Memorial.

“It is a site that is important to the city of Bristol and I cannot believe anyone would have done this.

“In addition to this there has been foul and abusive language painted on the private property of both the club and people living nearby.

“The individuals involved should be ashamed of themselves, and I am sure Bristol City will join with us in condemning such actions, just as we would if our fans were indulging in such actions.”

Bristol City chief executive Colin Sexstone said: “Along with everyone at Bristol City Football Club, I was appalled to hear of the desecration of the gates at the Memorial Stadium and would like to offer our unreserved apologies to Bristol Rugby and Bristol City FC.

“I am sure all Bristol City supporters will join me in condemning this mindless act of vandalism, which tarnishes the memory of those who laid down their lives for their country. The Bristol City Supporters Trust has already asked for donations to help pay the costs of any clean up, and I applaud their actions.”

“Mike lighten up, I don't want your hands on me you perv.
Anyway, I doubt the people who sprayed the graffiti knew it was a war memorial - they probably wanted to get in and out of there as soon as possible”

“To be honest, RJ from Clifton, I think Sexstone probably was apologising to Rovers, its just that through the Evening Posts slack and inept style of journalism and publishing it has come out as City.

As to the incident itself, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it rumoured that CSF (City Service Firm), which is one of the slogans scrawled across the memorial, is part of the Bristol 'wing' of the EDL (English Defence League)?

So much for the EDLs respect for War Memorials, obviously their so-called respect for service personnel and the war dead only applies when it suits them, and not when they want to get 'one over' on a rival football team.”

“I'm just surprised the Evening Post haven't declared it as a "Banksy" - they do with every other piece of scrawl!”

Why is he offing apologies to City? Surely he should be apologising to Rovers....”

“Ryan, don't play the only one club has a minority of fans that create problems card.

BOTH teams have a small minority that they would not want associated with them, and to be so naive to suggest that Rovers fans dont cause problems is hilarious, any fan of eithe Bristol side will openly admit to this.

At the end of the day the Memorial is to people of Bristol and more to do with the rugby club, clearly whoever was involved did not know what they were doing”

“I think John and Terry have both missed the point to be honest, the defacing of the memorial is what is being discussed, not petty Rovers and City arguments. I personally don't care about City either, but this is not the point we are talking about! I also don't think Rovers would do the same thing at the City ground. Finally, a nice gesture by the BCFC supporters club for holding a collection towards the clean up costs of the mess. Whoever is responsible is out of line.”
