Bristol City fans get involved in the Lee Johnson debate
I WRITE to wholeheartedly agree with Evening Post columnist Matthew Withers in "Fan's View" on October 20 with regard to Bristol City fans jeering opposition players.
It was very wrong to jeer Leroy Lita, a player who was a hero at City and whose transfer was good business for the club and progress to a higher level for the player himself.

Bristol City's Lee Johnson
We hear the same, or worse, whenever Nathan Ellington or Jamie Cureton turn out against us. It achieves nothing, aside from perhaps making the victim want to do that much better against us. Have a laugh when a shot hits the corner flag and then move on!
As for cheering the substitution of Lee Johnson, yes it was out of order. I believe GJ picks his best 11 and not his son plus 10 others, as some people seem to think. Lee is one of our more skillful players, in my opinion.
Also, a few words for J Williams (Your Shout 20th October) "Lambert is a Bargain Buy": agreed, he's been an excellent signing for Rovers but stick to that angle rather than bring in "waste of money at the Gate".
The best clubs always have strong squads and City's costly signings have all contributed both on the field and to the team ethic that GJ emphasises so much. It's proven to bring success at all levels.

CONGRATULATIONS to Matthew Withers who in the column last week Fan's View condemned those people who verbally abuse Lee Johnson.
No one can call themselves a supporter if they delight in picking on individual players whoever they are.
Sitting behind me in the Dolman Stand is someone who waits longingly for Lee's first error and then the abuse starts. No credit is ever given for the positives in his play.
The comment sometimes made that he only plays because he is the Manager's son is an insult to the integrity and honesty of the best manager we have had for a long, long time.
For the record Lee started in 37 of the 46 league matches last season. In those the City picked up 66% of the points on offer.
In the nine matches that he did not start the City obtained 34% of the points.
I well remember the last player who received abuse from the mindless minority early in his contract including an attack on him and his family in a supermarket. At the time he nearly left the club – his name Brian Tinnion

JED SAYS: Statistics don't lie and Lee has played a pivotal role in the success of Bristol City in recent times and the suggestion that he is selected only because he is the manager's son can only have come from people who firstly don't know anything about how Gary Johnson operates as both a man and manager and secondly don't know much about the game of football. The singling out of Lee by a small section of supporters at Ashton Gate has been ridiculous and he would not have had that singling out if had not been the boss' boy. Because of his relationship with the manager he is an easy target for some looking to have a good moan.
As for insulting and jeering former players, it has been part and parcel of the game for decades. Where things have altered is in the manner of these insults. There is a big difference between the friendly banter players used to get and the nastiness you sometimes get – across the country, I hasten to add – these days.
But the supporters doing this are often the ones who don't watch much of a game, choosing instead to taunt the opposing fans so their views on the sport are simply not worth listening to.
I HAVE read and heard a lot about City's direct approach play and the fact we play so much long ball stuff. I happen to think this is working for us even if it means Maynard is bypassed almost all the time in favour of the hoof up field to Adebola. Okay I know it's not always pretty to watch but it's getting us results and I for one think we should stick with it even if it means we have to be ridiculed by those North of the river. All those jokes about Bristol airport having to change it's flight path every other Saturday is beginning to wear thin. Gary Johnson's tactics are spot on in my opinion and for that reason I salute him.

JED SAYS: I'm not sure where all this is coming from. Gary Johnson has used long ball tactics from time to time – who hasn't? – but I don't consider them a long ball team and certainly not in the manner of the likes of Cambridge and Wimbledon all those years ago. Johnson did work closely with Cambridge's manager, John Beck, back then and, given that Cambridge rose up the Leagues so quickly using those tactics, he may feel that there are times when it is necessary to play that way. The game is about results and little else these days although let's not forget that football is supposed to be entertainment. Of course Rovers fans will have a dig at City in whichever way they can. It's what the rivalry in this city is all about.

“Matt and Paul
Come on play nice!
We are living the dream at the moment in a league that I thought would be a lot tougher for us and to be honest If we are here with only 10 players performing or due to us booing oppositions players or due to the fact the guy behind you hasn't changed his underwear since we got promoted ! Lets enjoy it !!! almost feels like some people are disappointed that we are doing so well, as they now have nothing to moan about.
From not such a regular visitor, due to the cost of an adult and 2 kids being similar to the national debt ...”

“In response to Paul Spencer's email, I wasn't aware that Paul either travelled to the game with me or sat next to me and so I'm not quite sure how he knows what time I turn up for games. The reception Leroy received before the game changes nothing about the abuse he took during the game. I agree with your overall point and of course by true City fans Leroy is held in great esteem.”

“If Mr Withers had bothered to teurn up early he would have heard that Leroy received a great reception as he left the pitch after the warm up. That shows the true affection in which he is held after achieving so much. As for booing him on the pitch - maybe the fans of Wolves and Donny should have booed - four goals in two games. Is this really all The Post can report on? Incidentally, I have seen the last 56 home games and many away and Lee Johnson is playing his best football for us right now. He is appreciated by the vast majority of the fans - the cheers when he was substituted were ironic because he is rarely taken off. Bristol City are sixth in The Championship and are tipped by Alex McLeish to make a serious promotion bid - is that not a story????”
