Bristol City fan's view: I believe City are still short of options up front

There was good news coming out of Ashton Gate this week, with reports that City had turned down a big-money offer for midfielder Marvin Elliott.

According to reports, Wolverhampton Wanderers made a formal bid in the region of £2 million for a player who has been outstanding since signing from Millwall 18 months ago.

It is no surprise to hear that clubs are interested in Marvin and Wolves manager Mick McCarthy could not have failed to be impressed when his side were held to a draw by City as Elliott was hugely influential in the middle of the pitch.

Gary Johnson and Steve Lansdown have stated that City do not intend or need to sell their best players and are looking to build a side. This shows ambition. However, ambition is not just about turning down bids for your better players. I believe that City are still short of options in the forward line, especially out wide and, without a doubt, and I'm sorry to repeat myself, we are crying out for a ball-playing central midfielder.

Gary Johnson has said that his intention is to sign a central defender before the transfer window shuts on February 2. I agree that we are short of cover at the back, but I do not believe this is where we need to strengthen most – James Wilson is coming back to fitness, Jamie McCombe is out for only a couple of weeks and Bradley Orr has signed his contract.

Gary has decided against offering a couple of trialists a contract and confirmed that there would be no business done over the weekend. While the boss and his team deserve some time off, I'm not sure, with only a week to go until the closure of the transfer window, that this was the best time.

If City are keen to push on for a play-off place then they do need further investment in the team. I would like to see us signing young hungry players from the Premiership or the lower leagues, as opposed to foreign signings who can only have been seen on a couple of occasions or on DVD.

All of that said, we are in a recession and City have to be prudent with their signings. One thing for sure is that our chairman won't spend for the sake of it and will also make sure that any deal is right for the club.

I was surprised to see that the Devon & Cornwall Police vetoed the idea of City and Plymouth bringing forward their league match at Home Park to Saturday after both sides had been knocked out of the FA Cup. The police refused the request and insisted that the game take place on Tuesday night. Now I don't know what else was going on in the South West at the weekend but for me it would have made sense to bring the game forward. Sometimes you do have to question the authorities.

After the Plymouth game we have two home fixtures against Barnsley and Charlton. We should be looking at seven points from the next three games and hopefully this will see us pushing towards a place near to the play-offs.
