Bristol City fan's view: Failure to convert possession into a second goal was costly

City fan Matt Withers: One's not enough. Sometimes it can be so, so frustrating being a Bristol City fan.

I'm not going to say that we deserved to beat Scunthorpe United, but at 1-0 up entering the third minute of injury-time, the points were there for the taking. Scunny are on a decent run, but we should have had more than enough to take all three points.

Fingers will no doubt be pointed in Lee Johnson's direction for his failed clearance, but that came after Jamie McCombe didn't do enough with the first header and after a poor free-kick being given away by Evander Sno.

The fact of the matter is that we once again failed to convert our decent possession into goals and chose to defend a lead rather than drive forward looking for more goals.

The best form of defence is attack and yet we chose to withdraw arguably the best forward-thinking midfielder in Paul Hartley and bring on a more defence-minded player in Cole Skuse.

Gary Johnson does seem to have a habit of trying to settle for what we have rather than continuing to attack.

Now I know that my FA Level One coaching badge does not make me a Championship manager in the waiting, but I really do have to question some of our tactics. I do not understand why the ball ends up at the feet of McCombe when we are looking to build an attack.

Jamie is a wholehearted player, but rarely looks comfortable on the ball. We should be coaching the midfielders to take ownership of the ball and carry it forward.

Sno and Hartley love the ball at their feet and rarely lose possession, and I would be telling my defenders to look for them at the earliest opportunity. Yet Gary seems happy with Jamie hitting a 30-yard ball into touch.

I would also question how much time we actually spend in training on some of the fundamentals of the game such as crossing the ball? No one can fault the work rate and passion of our full-backs, but neither Bradley Orr nor Jamie McAllister provides the quality required when delivering the ball into the box.

The ball is either delivered from too deep, making it all to easy for the opposition to defend or the cross is over hit or played in too close to the keeper.

In Ivan Sproule we have probably the quickest winger in the country but for all his pace you can count on one hand how many times Ivan gets a decent cross into the forwards.

Another area of frustration is our short corner routine. Twice in the game against Scunny we were strangely flagged for offside when rolling the ball backwards. Why can we not just take a direct corner?

It was also a bit of a surprise to see four central midfielders on the pitch at the same time. Sno, Marvin Elliott, Lee Johnson and Hartley are all best deployed in the middle of the pitch and yet we chose to play all four together. I think the intention was to allow the midfielders to swap positions, but I'm not sure it worked.

It is a concern to me that we have not scored in the first half of any game this season. I don't believe that it's down to starting slowly as in a number of games we have played well for the first 10 to 15 minutes.

We have to score more goals and that will only come with better quality ball into the forwards and by playing at a higher tempo than we did on Saturday.

“That is a very good assessment Matt.
Goals and relentless attacking displays have been in desperately short supply since we joined the Championship.
I know the squad has been knocked for six lately. Just hope the players who are currently missing can shake off their mystery virus quickly and replace the underperforming players in the starting eleven.”
