Bristol City's former defensive stop-gap Andy Webster scored for Scotland last night despite not playing a first-team game for Rangers since he left Ashton Gate.

The 27-year-old, who spent six months on loan at Bristol City this season, opened the scoring for Scotland in their 3-0 'B' international victory over Northern Ireland after being called up at late notice by his former Hearts manager George Burley.

Webster has 22 international caps and a senior international goal to his name but has struggled with injury during his time at Ibrox.

He made just six appearances in his six-month loan spell at Ashton Gate but Scotland manager Burley believes he still has a bright future.

He said: "When I was at Hearts, Andy Webster was an outstanding player.

"For whatever reason, over the last few years, it hasn't quite happened for him.

"But he showed he is still capable of pushing back into the Scottish reckoning."

Just 2,110 fans braved wet and windy conditions to make the trip to Cumbernauld for this game but Burley declared the exercise a worthwhile one.

There was no place in the side though for Bristol City full back Jamie McAllister who is still hoping to build on his solitary cap for his country.

“Hasn't Naysmith injured his knee badly? Macca should be in the first team now then?!”
