Bristol City are preparing to table a bid for inspirational Crawley Town defender Kyle McFadzean.

Bolstering a defence that has failed to keep a clean sheet in 26 games dating back to April 21 remains manager Derek McInnes' priority and The Post can reveal the Scot is targeting 25-year-old centre-back McFadzean.

A member of the Crawley team that dumped City out of the FA Cup 12 months ago, the 6ft 1in defender is under contract at the Sussex club until the end of next season.

Although Crawley boss Richie Barker wants to keep the talismanic defender at Broadfield Stadium beyond January, The Post understands a fee in the region of £500,000 could be enough to prise him away.

In the market for dominant first-ball-winning centre halves, McInnes has also made an inquiry for Manchester United youngster Scott Wootton with a view to bringing him to Ashton Gate on loan until the end of the season.

But he would prefer to bring players in on a permanent basis and the Scot is considering making a formal offer for Yorshireman McFadzean, who has made 87 appearances and scored eight goals for Crawley.

    “@harryreg_uk:

    Initial £350k plus add ons.

Wages: I would estimate @ £750Kpa in total.

That will be enough to fund McFadzean & Kelly”

“£500,000, league one defender and nearly out of contract - surely a mis-print?

(or copied in error off one of the rumour sites more likely!)”

“No idea how much Pitman and now Woolford to Millwall will have raised to help towards purchases like these but they must have been 2 of our highest wage earners - still a fair few to off load though!”

And if you think that AA will keep us up with the defence & midfield we've got, you're deluded.Given your ongoing comments regarding McInnes and the Board, how do you think we're going to bring in the quality to strengthen the team and the number of players needed without selling?

And please don't say sell Woolford, Morris etc, etc because that'll raise next to nothing.”

“If we sell AA, then it's goodbye Championship status. A stupid comment.”

“Long throw expert and a right back

This confirms exactly where we're shopping (Perhaps rightly so) however £500k seems unrealistic as his contract expires in June although, ala Liam Kelly there will be add ons for staying up etc included in that figure.

If we want to move up a notch (and this Board have been instructed to hit Budgets by SL)we'll have to sell AA if we want to go up a notch or two.

We signed AA from Barnet so this is probably a sensible place to look.”
