Bristol City have completed the signing of goalkeeper Steve Collis on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

And the arrival of the former Yeovil Town No 1 will now pave the way for Stephen Henderson to join League One Wycombe Wanderers on loan.

Collis goes straight into the squad and will be on the substitutes' bench to provide cover for first-choice Dean Gerken when City take on arch rivals Cardiff in a Coca-Cola Championship match at Ashton Gate tonight.

His inclusion effectively means the end of the line for former fans' favourite Adriano Basso, who has been on the transfer list since refusing to sign a new contract last summer.

City have yet to receive a single offer for the Brazilian keeper and, unless a club comes in for him before the transfer window slams shut next Monday, he is likely to see out his Ashton Gate contract while watching games from the stands.

A free agent after canceling his contract with League Two Crewe Alexandra by mutual consent last month, 28-year-old Collis has been training with City for the past three weeks.

Manager Gary Johnson worked with Collis during his time in charge of Yeovil and he believes his latest signing will provide keen competition for Gerken.

He said: "Steve is a more experienced goalkeeper and he will give us a very good alternative option.

"I know him from my time at Yeovil and he is a very capable, solid player, the kind I know I can trust."

As revealed in last Friday's Evening Post, Henderson is set to join Wycombe Wanderers on loan.

Johnson confirmed: "Stephen is a young goalkeeper who needs to be playing games and Wycombe can give him that. He will go for a month initially, but it could be for longer if he does well."

Lee Johnson, Frankie Artus, Christian Ribeiro and Tristan Plummer have already been sent out on loan and more players are expected to follow them out of Ashton Gate this month.

Having signed striker Patrick Agyemang, winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Collis during the January transfer window, manager Johnson said: "Another one or two will probably need to go out on loan.

"The newcomers will create extra competition for places and that means some players will not be among the seven substitutes. They could still be a part of our plans, but they will need to play games in the meantime."

But Johnson insists he has no plans to loan young striker John Akinde, who recently returned from a short spell at Wycombe.

He explained: "John is young and still improving and I think he will learn from staying here and working with Patrick Agyemang.

"Like Patrick, he has a presence and gives us a useful back-up if we need a powerful player to lead the line."
