Cunningham’s career began at Mervue United in 2004. He remained at the club until 2007, when he secured a contract in the Manchester City Academy.

His stellar performances during his time in the Under-18s and EDS team saw him promoted to the senior squad during the 2009-10 campaign.

Cunningham made his first team debut for City as a second half substitute in 2010, in a 4–2 victory over Scunthorpe in an FA Cup fourth-round tie.

The year continued to be an excellent one for Galway-born Cunningham, who played his first senior international match for Ireland in May. Cunningham, who had played at Under-17 and Under-19 level, contributed to the 3-0 win over Algeria at the RDS, Dublin.

The month also saw him win his first full cap against Brazil. By the end of 2010 he had won three full caps.

Cunningham signed a new four-year deal with City in August 2010, and in the months that followed was loaned to both Leicester City and Nottingham Forest.

His spell with Leicester lasted from October 2010 to January 2011. But as his time with the club drew to a close, he fractured his tibia during a match against Hull. The injury saw him sidelined for four months of the season.

By October he was back on form, and joined Nottingham Forest on loan until the end of December.

His excellent performance saw his stay extended until the end of the season. Reds boss Steve Cotterill told the club’s official website at the time: “"He's a really good footballer and a fantastic lad - he has fitted in around the place very well.”

Bristol City are hoping to conclude the signing of Cunningham within the next few days.
