BRISTOL City manager Gary Johnson today appealed to the club's loyal supporters to help his team recover from adversity.

Beaten 4-1 by Coca-Cola Championship promotion contenders Reading at the weekend, City's players face a major test of character when they return to action in Saturday's Sky-televised encounter with Southampton at St Mary's.

Johnson believes the fans have a crucial part to play in reviving fortunes on the pitch and issued an impassioned rallying call to the club's support base, urging diehard reds to rediscover the spirit of 2005.

Johnson wants fans to recreate the positive wave of support which accompanied his first few months in charge of City. Having succeeded Brian Tinnion three years ago, the Londoner presided over a wretched nine-match sequence without a win and feared for his job when City slipped to the foot of League One shortly before Christmas.

But the supporters remained loyal and helped the former Yeovil Town boss inspire a change in fortunes which saw the Robins narrowly miss out on the play-offs several months later.

"Those were difficult times for the club," recalled Johnson. "But those fans who came along week after week never stopped believing and, thanks to them, we turned things around and went on a long unbeaten run.

"We need that spirit again and that's why I was so grateful to those fans who kept singing right up until the end of the Reading game.

"Those are the people we really need now. They are the ones who remember where we've come from. They appreciate what this group of players has done for this football club and they haven't forgotten.

"They helped us overcome adversity before and they're support means we will bounce back again. God bless them, I'm proud of them."

But a small minority of the Ashton Gate crowd has proved less patient and individual players and the manager have come in for unaccustomed criticism at times this season.

Although the vast majority of fans did their best to lift the team on Saturday, others made their feelings known when greeting the second-half substitution of Lee Johnson, Ivan Sproule and Nicky Maynard with ironic cheers.

Johnson senior fears such criticism threatens the carefully-constructed team spirit which has played such a significant part in the club's rise from the depths of League One to the upper reaches of the Championship.

He warned: "If they're not careful, we are going to lose some of our players in terms of confidence.

"It could be a couple or it could be quite a few and, when that happens, it becomes dangerous."

City's manager issued a timely reminder to the critics when he said: "This group of players has done a fantastic job. I think some of our supporters have forgotten that.

"I don't know whether or not it's those who have recently jumped on the bandwagon and are used to seeing Bristol City win every week and being promoted.

"But they have to realise we're not going to win every game in the Championship and they can't expect us to be brilliant every week.

"Of course we're all disappointed when we don't play well, but people have to remember where we've come from."

“Some good comments by all. Yes, ultimately the players who pull on the Bristol City shirt should be supported whomever they may be, and ironic cheers when LJ is substituted helps nobody - but the increasing jeers are showing the growing level of frustration felt by a growing number of fans. Garry is quick to drop out of form players, yet a struggling LJ is the first name on the team sheet each week despite his form being so weak it feels like we are playing with ten men at times. Right now our starting eleven needs an injection of class and ability to not only retain the ball but unlock opposition defences. Garry: give David Noble and Lee Trundle a start (remember: their introduction transformed the team during the second half against Plymouth and rescued you a point from a certain defeat), and let both players have a run of at least half-a-dozen games starting in the first eleven. If things don't improve you can bring your boy back in. You've proved you are a good manager over the past three years but you do get things wrong from time to time. The fans are happy to accept this providing you are man enough to make the changes necessary. Let's not see David Noble frozen out any longer and follow the same path as Keogh and Carle out of Ashton Gate.”

“I think a majority of the fans down the gate are very supportive of the team. The players leaving the field at half time in the Plymouth and Reading games were greeted with a chorus of "Come on you reds" which i felt was superb and any player who doesnt get a lift from that sort of thing shouldnt be out there in the first place. Again on saturday the fans that stayed to the end were excellent. There is however an increasing ammount of fans who shower some of the city players with a torrent of abuse the second they make a mistake and Lee Johnson has beared the brunt of this abuse for a number of below par performances. Obviously fans are going to say they pay their money so they can shout what they want and they are right, but personally i can never understand somebody who thinks that booing, screaming abuse or in the case of LJ on saturday, cheering when they are substituted is going to help the player or the team. For what its worth i actually think that technically LJ is a good player but i also agree that he has parts of his game which are lacking and leave him exposed at that level. I was disgusted at the reception he was given when substituted on Sat and rightly or wrongly i felt very sorry for him. Lets try to remember that its not LJ who picks the team week in week out and therefore it is not his fault that he is not substituted when we all think he should be. Maybe i misread the situation on Sat. Maybe the cheers that greeted the substitution were aimed at Gary and not Lee. It certainly didnt seem that way to me though. I have been left puzzled at some of the team selections and substitutions that Johnson has made this season, especially the continued absense of David Noble and the in and out selections of Lee Trundle but at the end of the day its very hard to criticise Johnson when you consider what city have achieved in the last 3 years. So instead i bite my lip and try to support and encourage the players out on the pitch 100% regardless of if i think they should be there or not. I so hope that the positive and sometimes humourous support that i saw on Sat grows and that the negative criticism that crept in stops. If it does then i am certain that whoever is out on the pitch will rise to it and Ashton Gate will become and really tough place to visit for away teams.”

“Another excuse for his son's poor performances, THE FANS now, ha, what next. I believe you can't blame one person and Reading out classed us. The thing that annoys me the most is when Gary Johnson keeps saying "fans forget what this side has done". No we haven't forgot Gary we just cant keep living in the past. The players have done well but some of them are out of there depth now and that I'm afraid includes Lee Johnson. We need some changes. Its alright to criticise the fans Gary but it wasn't easy for someone like me to save nearly £400 to watch the team i love for a season. So when i see players like your son doing nothing week in week out i think I'm entitled to my opinion. I'm sure I'm not the only one? I think your a great manager but I'm afraid your causing a lot of friction between fans and LJ by keep starting him. After all you've dropped everyone else and made them fight for their places? We cant be all wrong? I herd a good 70% of Ashton Gate cheering when LJ was subbed, that's a lot to be wrong? We're all watching the same game after all? I'm behind the team and I'm off to Southampton to cheer the boys on. As we all know LJ will be 1st on that team sheet again, so lets be having a performance from you Lee and prove to us your worthy of your place!!!!!”

“I think GJ needs to consontrate on getting it right on the pitch before he goes around giving press conferences on the fans....I have never heard such rubbish blaming the new fans all the time?? i have been coming to ashton gate for 30 years and even though i personally didnt cheer when LJ was subbed i can totally understand why they did and i witnessed long term fans that been coming alot longer than GJ been there doing that very thing of cheering off LJ....his perfornence was awful.....you just worry about doing your job correctly gary....you love it when things are going right and your getting all the praise and pats on the back.....but are not man enough to stand there and take it when things are not going right?? People who pay £400+ pounds a year have a right to have an opinion and to voice that opinion......And it really gets on my goat when i hear you in a press meeting and you say lets hope they ( the fans ) dont come back??? which i have heard you say in 2 different press meetings in the last 6 weeks.....Sorry but that is totally out of order mr johnson?? And as far as your son goes he puts in a very below par performance week after week and is never subbed or dropped for a while to sort himself out....any other player even the likes of trundle who i'm afraid is far superior to your boy is dropped out the squad for a while.....so im afraid you have caused this problem with your boy trying to shelter him and keep him in the side.....now i think you should do whats right by LJ and BCFC and let him go!!!
And stop trying to cause rifts amonst the fans?? i watched you at the plymouth game tell 2 fans which i personally know been coming to AG for 20 years + to not come back.....thats disgusting in my opinion?? Just because 1 of them said your son was a disgrace which he was that night!!! And the way you snubbed the atyeo, dolman and williams stands that night was also disgusting.....And remenber 1 thing us the fans will still be believing long long after your gone gary??”
