And O'Driscoll, who worked with Moloney while in charge at Forest earlier this season, is hoping the versatile defender will be signed up in time to feature in Saturday's home game against Ipswich Town.

O'Driscoll confirmed: "We are talking to Brendan and, if he is available on a free transfer, which we are aware he is, he will be a good addition for us.

"He can play right-back, left-back and centre half and, at 24, is the right age. He has played a lot of games in the Championship and has never let me down.

"Financially, he fits in with what the club want to do in the future and he is reliable and solid as a character.

"He has been at a club where he has not had enough games, because they have always had the ability to buy someone more expensive. If they sign someone who is more expensive, they usually play ahead of you.

"That happened with me this season. He started the season with me and I then had the opportunity to bring in someone else and Brendan had to be patient."
