Bristol City boss Johnson puts faith in Skuse for wing-back role

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson admits he will have no hesitation in deploying Cole Skuse as a right wing-back against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

All-rounder Skuse came off the substitutes' bench to deputise for Bradley Orr, who limped off 18 minutes into last Saturday's Championship clash at Barnsley.

And the Bristolian proved his versatility by turning in an exemplary performance to help the Robins win 3-2 and move into the play-off positions.

Although a hospital scan revealed no serious damage to Orr's calf muscle, the Liverpudlian is unlikely to recover in time to be considered for this Saturday's home game against Wednesday. If Orr fails to make it, the likelihood is that midfielder Skuse will continue on the right flank.

"I reckon I could play Cole Skuse in just about any position and he would do a good job," said manager Johnson. "He's a very talented footballer and has that versatility you need to play a number of different roles.

"When Brad was injured, Skuse was the natural choice to fit into the right-back position and I thought he did very well in that role.

"He's a decent defender and, because he is a natural athlete, he is able to go from box to box easily.

"Not only was he getting forward and posing a threat to Barnsley's defence, he was also getting back quickly to cover when we did not have the ball.

"I'll have no hesitation in playing him there again if I need to."

A central midfielder during his formative years in Bristol City's Academy set-up, Skuse has featured in several positions in the first team, including centre-back, left-back and on the right wing.

He also has previous experience of the playing at right-back in the Championship, having been deployed in that role in games against Leicester City in November 2007 and Wolves in September 2008. But that was in a flat back four and Johnson believes Skuse is better suited to the wing-back role.

He explained: "His athleticism means he is ideal for the job. There is a lot of running involved in that position and Cole is a very fit lad.

"He's played there before and he understands what the role entails."

Orr underwent a scan on his injured calf on Monday and was relieved to discover there was no serious damage.

"It's something which could take a week to sort out," said Johnson.

"Sometimes players have a problem when they have been playing in hard grounds for a long time and that is what has happened to Brad.

"He felt it in his lower calf and we sent him for a scan as a precautionary measure. It's nothing serious, but he won't be able to train until late in the week and it's unlikely he will recover fully in time to be considered for the Sheffield Wednesday game.

"Christian Ribeiro can also play in that position, but he's still not quite ready after picking up a groin injury playing for the Welsh Under-21s the other week. Brian Wilson is also out injured and it's fortunate we have someone as versatile as Cole Skuse."

“So we're top six, have lost just twice and this article is about the versatility of the excellent Cole Skuse and some losers still turn it into yet another tedious thread about LJ, a useful squad member who hasn't been an automatic selection this season, yawn.”

And Pete that is my opinion,it appears that anyone who does not completely buy in to your opinions are Gas, a very sad and arbritary view.”

“Think about what you are saying... Its a squad game Neil. LJ played against Barnsley but didn't against Plymouth.

Rotation seems to be working for us, so long may it continue.

It seems as though the majority of the anti-LJ brigade are either glory hunting, clueless Muppets with very short memories... Or school kids with a very naive view of the game.

Enjoy the rest of half term.”

“Did it occur to anyone that LJ plays to provide defensive cover to allow the likes of Sno, Hartley and Elliott to get forward? In a similar argument to the Lampard/Gerrard debate you can't have players all run in one direction.”

    “Mike;

Would the record in question be "DROP THE BOY" by Bros???

We're all still singing it - and will do until Hartley Sno Elliott is recognised as the best middle 3 by far.”

“Good shout Dean. While we are at it GJ might as well move Sno inbetween the sticks and shift Hartley into the Reserves so Junior can really cement his place in the middle.

Having said all that, I guess Junior will not be starting against Sheffield Wednesday because there is a new rotation system in place, so it is his turn to be dropped?”
