ANGRY Bristol City boss Gary Johnson today promised to give his players a rocket after their abject surrender against Reading.

Trounced 4-1 by the slick Coca-Cola Championship promotion hopefuls at the weekend, City suffered their biggest home defeat since Blackpool won 4-2 at Ashton Gate in August 2006.

Manager Johnson admits his team were second best and is now demanding a dramatic improvement ahead of next Saturday's Sky TV showdown with Southampton at St Mary's.

"They're in for a tough week and they're going to end up hating someone," warned Johnson. "That someone will probably be me, but I don't care so long as they show the right level of commitment when we play Southampton.

"They have to be angry about something and I'll make them angry.

"We lacked the passion and commitment Reading had and we lacked their quality as well. We're not happy about it and we've held our hands up.

"I want the boys to feel angry about what happened. Our best game might have matched Reading, but we didn't compete. If you don't produce you're best game, then these sides are going to show you what they've got at this level. Reading will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season and we want to be competing against sides like that. But we didn't get close enough to them mentally or physically."

City's second home defeat of the campaign saw them drop to tenth place and Johnson now has five days in which to lift his players and rediscover a winning formula.

He said: "I now have to sort the wood from the trees. It's going to be hard work this week and I need to find the ones who can handle what we're going to be doing.

"We have to make sure we have a really big week and go into the Southampton game showing the passion and commitment we lacked against Reading.

"They have to be angry young men and they have to be committed. We'll not be silly, but we'll not be holding back in training either. They'll have sessions which will be hard, fast and aggressive and get them in the right mood for Southampton on Saturday."

Johnson accused his players of "weak defending" against Reading and admitted: "They were just taking the ball off us and carving through us like a knife through butter.

"We'll look at the video to see where we went wrong, but nobody really came out of it with any credit with the exception of Stern John."

Johnson singled out the loan signing from Southampton for special praise after seeing his team out-played. John scored an injury-time consolation goal for the home side and City's manager confided: "He was the only player in our side who showed Premiership quality. That's a worry, given that the Premier League is what we aspire to.

"Stern held the ball up, created chances for himself and was the only one not to give it away easily."

Johnson defended his decision to rest veteran striker Dele Adebola and deploy John alongside Nicky Maynard, who was hauled off in the 59th minute after failing to make an impression.

"Anyone can be wise in hindsight and pick a team, but we felt that Dele needed to rest after playing four games in 11 days," explained Johnson. "Because Stern is so good at holding the ball up and bringing others into play, we felt we needed Nicky's pace to get in behind their defenders.

"Stern cannot play against Southampton under the terms of his loan deal and Dele will be back on Saturday."

Already without injured defenders Louis Carey and Jamie McAllister, City were further weakened by the absence of midfielder Gavin Williams, ruled out by a calf strain sustained in the recent goalless draw with Sheffield United.

“I have "kept my tinder dry" as they say since Saturday but I hate to say it but this was a result that has been threatened for some time. Yes I know that Reading still have a lot of players who tore this division apart a few seasons back and initially thrived in the Premiership, but we made them look even better than they really were.

There were only 2 players who came out of Saturday's match with much credit and that was Basso and Stern John.

Bradley Orr struggled with Hunt, who is a difficult customer, but at least he wasn't completely outclassed. However like most of the rest of the team he is not playing as well as last year.

At the back Wilson was shown up by Reading as not really being up to it as a full back. He and Fontaine (who is probably the only one who has improved since last season - until Saturday!) were given a torrid time. Some of their defending was also just so naive.

Likewise McCombe's footballing skills disappeared under pressure. Jamie is not good at dealing with pace, and there was no doubt that as a team Reading were both physically and mentally quicker than our players by a few yards, plus they put us under pressure at all times. They also actually know how to play the ball into space for another player to run onto, a skill that has been severely lacking from our play almost all season.

Marvin was outmuscled in the midfield and still doesn't look like he has recovered from last season's injury. He had one shot before halftime that was a good effort but other than that it wasn't a performance he will want to remember.

Lee Johnson just had a horrible game - crabbing passes sideways and backwards, giving the ball to a colleague with a man on him, setting up at least one of Reading's goals. That when he wasn't just giving it away! His creativity was nil and he really did deserve to be substituted whatever his supporters might say. He looked out of his depth on Saturday, a boy against men. He also didn't compare well against Brian Howard on Tuesday, avery similar player both physically and technically.

As others have said, one way or another we have really got into a horrible position with LJ, where a sizeable portion of the crowd really think that GJ gives his son the benefit of the doubt that he doesn't give to other players. That isn't good for either of them or the club, and the only decent way out of this would be to find a replacement for LJ. Williams would appear to be the best option at the club at the moment, but what we could really do with right now is a "Gerry Gow-like" player right now in the centre of midfield. Creative, but hard as nails in the tackle, and braveheart through and through. Shaggy perm is of course optional!

Sproule looks like he has lost belief in his own skills. Saturday was his chance to show he could hold down a permanent place in the starting 11 and I am afraid he blew it. He has pace to burn yet seemed scared to go to the byline and cross the ball into the box where it was needed.

McIndoe needs to look up and stop trying to beat the opposition all by himself. His head goes down and that's it, he's off trying to dribble past all 11 players. Usually he makes it past 2 if he's lucky! He drifts inside all the time, and doesn't give the team any width at all. He also won't cross or shoot when that is the right option, but is willing to waste free kicks with speculative efforts from 25 yards out, that everyone in the ground knows have less than a 10% chance of even being on target. let alone get past the keeper.

As for poor Nicky Maynard he has been failed by those behind him. Absolutely no service worth the description, that's what has done for his confidence. He does need to bulk up a bit as he is somewhat lightweight against defenders at this level, but he is a striker who needs to be played through into space. Lumping balls upfield for him to head is just stupid, as he is never going to get anywhere against big central defend”

“Since when did we lose at Cardiff? 0-0 I believe.

How about City fans start supporting LJ, and see how that affects his performance?

This isn't under 12s, he's not in the team because his Dad's the boss. He's in the team because a very good, successful manager deems him worthy of a place in it. We all have our opinions but I'm happy to stick by the man who got us this far.

Think we're looking at mid-table this season I think anyway, the fight, element of surprise and bits of luck we enjoyed last year just aren't happening. And the top end of the division shows a lot more quality than it did a year ago.”

“I just think the short and curly's are, GJ needs to stop saying he has every faith in his league 1 side, and bring in some quaility if we really want to push on to the prem, we should be buying our players from the prem......not from league 1 and below...as they just dont seem to be able to cut it at this level........i would suggest only prob 5 of our present team could cut it at this level......and its now definately time that GJ let his son go somewhere he can compete and thats league 1 or 2 and i'm not saying that to have a pop at him i'm saying it to protect the lad.....he has had his chance to prove he can cut it at this level and he clearly cant we could see that last season.”
