Gary Johnson is planning to add to his Bristol City squad ahead of this month's deadline for loan signings.

City have been swamped by injuries to senior players in recent weeks and manager Johnson says is looking to bolster a defence which has been hit especially hard.

Jamie McCombe is out for the remainder of the season, Brian Wilson is yet to make his comeback from a fractured shin and Jamie McAllister is still nursing a calf strain which has already caused him to miss three games.

Johnson is able to call upon youngsters James Wilson and Christian Ribeiro if needs be, but both are young and lacking in Championship experience. He will instead seek recourse in the loan market and target either a left-back or centre-back capable of doing a job for the team during the final two months of the season.

Although Bradley Orr, Louis Carey, Lewin Nyatanga and Liam Fontaine have forged a solid defensive unit in recent weeks, an injury to any of those four would leave City short of experienced cover.

Johnson confirmed: "I feel we need to strengthen in that particular department and I'm looking to see what is available.

"We still have a few weeks to bring in someone on loan and we could do with another left-back or centre-half.

"It's a difficult situation, because you need experience in the Championship and you cannot bring that in and then sit it on the bench.

"Those defenders who are currently in the side are doing well and I cannot really bring anyone in over and above them. But things can change quickly and, given the long- term injuries we have at the moment, we are only an injury or a suspension away from being left short at the back.

"As things stand, I only have youngsters to provide cover.

"I can wait and see if one or two of the injured lads recover quickly, or I can bring someone in before the end of March. I'm not going to name names, but that is the road we are likely to go down."

The Post understands Johnson was close to signing a central defender on loan during the early part of February, only for the deal to fall through at the 11th hour.

Since then, giant centre-back McCombe has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee problem and left-back McAllister has been sidelined too.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that on-loan striker Chris Iwelumo will be available to play for City against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday, March 13.

City manager Johnson believed Iwelumo's loan spell was due to conclude immediately after Tuesday's Championship clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, but an eagle-eyed member of staff at Ashton Gate studied the paperwork and noticed that the striker could face Reading.

"It came as a bit of a surprise to everyone," admitted Johnson. "I thought the month was up after next Tuesday, so did Mick McCarthy (Wolves manager) and even Chris himself!

"Having him for the Reading game is a nice bonus for us."

Top-scorer Nicky Maynard and winger Jamal Campbell- Ryce are back to full fitness and are pushing for a recall to the starting line-up to face Doncaster, but Marvin Elliott, Evander Sno and Jamie McAllister are ruled out.

“I dont get why some people want to moan about the club that they 'support'. If your son was doing a peice of drama, and you went to SUPPORT him, if he forgot his lines, you wouldn't tell him he was worthless and tell him to jog on, no you don't. You stand by him, helping him and assisting him to acheive his dramatic dream. So why don't fickle fans buck up their ideas and stop moaning.

Since GJ arrived, we have acheived promotion, and consolodated in the Championship. In our first season, we had, admitably, a rather lucky journey to Wembley. But some fans seem to feel that we should be consistantly up there. OPEN YOUR EYES AND SMELL THE BACON!!! The Championship is unpredictable. Look at teams like Watford. In our first season up, they also exceded expectations. But they changed their manager and are in a relegation dog fight. We needs stability and, for at least another season, GJ gives us that stability.

LJ has recieved a lot of stick, but if you watch the other players on the pitch, they make the same number of mistakes as he does. But some people just pick on him because he is the managers son. That is bullying a player, so how do you expect them to perform well if you constantly heckle him from the stands. He is a darn lot better than me or anyone who boo's him from the stand, so if you cant do better, stop moaning.

PJ is a rather unpreduictable scout who has given us a lot of greif with players like Sabario and Styvar (need i go on), but he has also got us players like Basso for free (OK he rebeled but 4 years of his services for free, bargin), he also got us Elliot and McIndoe. He needs a more experienced scout to make sure he cuts out these mistakes (because when he makes a mistake, it tends to be a big one. But when he gets in right, we get good quality players for next to nothing.

Get behind team Johnson, without them, we'd be playing the likes of Exeter instead of the likes of Newcastle.”

“GJ is the most successful City manager for a generation, he should therefore be sacked - brilliant thinking.
"Young players not given a chance" oh if only it were so simple, it could be that they are not good enough yet to play at Championship level. We've all heard this desperate argument before - remember how Marvin Brown was the answer to all our problems when he was 15.

    And Nigel
"You are out of your depth at this level which is going to be reflected in season ticket sales"
So the final verdict on what makes a good manager is down to those who wont watch a side unless they are winning every week.
Oh how I'll miss that type of 'support'.

I thought as 'true' fans you're supposed to sneer at johnny come latelys.

As a fan you can carry on supporting the team, thankfully you don't pick it.”

“Well what idiots write on here is beyond belief They are so Johnsonited in all his idiotic formations and failiure to give Academy players experience at this level. Its no different to last seasons ending when Academy players could and should have been given a chance, but Johnson want's results when playoff places arn't gonna happen. These so called fans support Johnson more than Bristol City and are frightened that he might up sticks.Don't worry he's on a long contract he's got to take it as well as give it.Get rid of the Chief scout over there with all the rubbish that's been signed he needs scalping shut the Academy if Johnson fails to bring them in for the last few games.”

“Neither are you Bob, that's an important point.

Glen, i am also a season ticket holder, i just happen to be in Canada at the moment. I am fully aware of what a supporter is, the definition was talken from the oxford English dictionary. You clearly are not one. Constant criticism of the manager and SL's decisions is not supporting the club.

The constant sniping is the exact opposite of support.”

“i am not managing the club JP because i have not been given the opportunity, but i tell you one thing. i wouldn't have been the clown who signed the likes of andy smith, bas savage, styvar, stern john, trundle, saborio etc, and conned fans like you into believing they were great players by calling them golf clubs. but it's ok because you aren't the person bankrolling these failures are you?”

“Brown may possibly survive as PM and Johnson as City manager.

There's a saying that "everyone rises to one position above their ability". It is certainly the case with these two and the conseqences do not bare thinking about.”

    “JP Quebec,

I am a supporter. I supported the club for decades before The Johnson Family Inc arrived and will continue to do so ¿ if we still have a solvent club left ¿ long after they have gone.

The definition of supporter in the UK clearly differs from what you are used to in Canada.

Over here, if something is wrong, folk who pay good money week in/week out speak up.
And if that upsets a family coining it in and a fan based in Canada, so what.

Your blinkered view would have seen you happily stand in line behind the Third Reich.

John, Briz is spot on. Shut the Academy at the end of this season before another young career is left to rot.
Gary, Pete and Lee can then go cap-in-hand to Steve Lansdown and secure another five year extension to their contracts with the money saved.”

“Nice to see so many comments from sensible people today, as opposed to the usual whining anti-Johnson brigade.

Tony, Nigel may well be a fan, but he is certainly not a supporter. The definition 'a person who supports a sports team, policy, etc' (oxford dictionary) certainly does not apply to people like him, Glen from Backwell, Dolman Bob etc.

If these people think they know better, why aren't they managing a club? Because they don't know better.

Nigel, do you really think that GJ is going to take any notice of the likes of you?”

    “@tony
Yes I am a fan,and one who spends hard earned cash every other saturday to watch the dross in the main served up this season, and last, rather than a fanatic sitting 1,000 miles away. Being a fan however doesn't mean I have to worship the manager, who in my view has run out of ideas and we therefore need a change.
Not just my view - see how many season cards we sell for next season.
Johnson cannot continue dining on what he acheived 2/3 seasons ago,
He has spent good money on poor signings, and his brother is a joke as a scout.
Forget what was done in 07/08 in football terms that's ancient history.
Even last season, when we were going nowhere, so no risk whatsoever, he refused to give the young squad members a chance - I repeat therefore that the academy may as well close.
The alternative being that the club gets rid of the current coaches at under 18 level and brings in someone with a good track record of developing young players that even Johnson cannot ignore.”

Do you have anything positive to say about City, John? After all you are a fan of the club, aren't you?”
