Bristol City boss Johnson defends selection of his son
Bristol City boss Gary Johnson last night insisted midfielder and son Lee is picked on merit and dismissed any suggestion that he was guilty of favouritism.
The issue of the midfielder's continued selection has polarised opinion amongst supporters since he was re-united with Johnson senior after signing from Hearts in August 2006.
-

The Bristol City manager, however, broke his silence on the long-running criticism at a Bristol Sport forum at the Cadbury House Hotel in Congresbury, which was specially arranged to raise money for the Special Care Baby Unit at St Michael's Hospital.
Johnson senior insisted that Lee was one of 'six or seven' players who make up the nucleus of his side and that the success City have enjoyed over the last three seasons made it impossible for any charges of nepotism to be levelled in his direction.
He said: "I think I am more experienced, so it is certainly a more difficult situation for Lee. It is difficult for him because he sees it as being picked by his Dad, whereas I just look at it as simply picking a player.
"The only way it can work is if it is a successful partnership. If we had suffered two or three difficult seasons and a couple of relegations it could be classed as nepotism, for sure.
"We have been together from the Conference to the Championship and have been involved in three promotions. He gives me a game that I feel I need and the fact that he is my son is really neither here nor there.
"There are six or seven lads that are the nucleus of our team and I will pick them every week because I am trying to keep the continuity, which has been a key part in our success over the last couple of years.
"There are times people want me to leave him out, but I can't always do that because you just pick the team that you think will progress the club.
"I treat all the players the same and whatever I say to any of them is done for the right reasons. You have to do that because the minute you start treating any player differently, you are in danger of losing the dressing room."
Johnson was joined on the panel by former Bristol Rugby star Mark Regan, ex-Gloucestershire CCC cricketer Mark Alleyne and Bristol Rovers first-team coach Paul Trollope.
Trollope was asked a question regarding the future of 28-goal marksman Rickie Lambert. The Rovers head coach made it clear that he wanted Lambert to stay at the Memorial Stadium – but admitted that every player has a price.
"Rickie wants to progress in his own career and play as high as he can, just like every other player," Trollope said.
"He is a good League One player and I think he could play in the Championship with the right team and the right personnel to get the best out of him.
"We want him to stay, but if the money was right and the time was right for the club and Rickie, it is something that may happen.
"We are aware that every player has got a price and it will be interesting to see if it comes in the summer."

“Fair Weather Supporter? I think not, I've been a season ticket holder for the last 23 years and being that i'm 35. I think that's fairly good going, that plus I've seen 32 games so far this season, (33 including saturday coming) considering you can't actually write a sensible reply without even using something as simple as paragraph's, I must challenge you to ask if your the school kid. Since most of your comments are about me and not what i've said, Attack the comment, not the poster.
Neil Warnock said when signing Carle it was a suprise to be able to get him, but Gary Johnson had felt he didn't need him now his son was fit. It's upto you if you believe Warnock or not, but that was his comments.
I'm looking at the recent history and this season we have without a doubt gone backwards, the league table shows it. Johnson stated pre-season the aim for the season was Automatic Promotion we've barely look a Play-off team this season and mid-table was always going to be the aim.
This for me is due to johnson staying too loyal to his 6/7 players many of whom haven't been upto it this season, if Johnson continues to stay loyal to these players and not replacing those who can't progress the club, there is as much chance of us fighting relegation as there is of chasing promotion.
I enjoyed the highs of last season, however this season's mid-table and 13 Home Draw's is nothing to be "excited" about, yes we are established in this division, but so are Blackpool who came up with us.
Johnson has done alot of good since he's been here, but he's now at a turning point where he needs to rebuild the squad and first team to take us on a level.”

“Well done Phil. I think your the first fair weather supporter to get home from school and comment on this story.
When exactly did Neil Warnock say that thats the reason Nick Carle was sold? Why exactly would he have the slightest idea about City's motivation for accepting their bid? This manager will take us down before he takes us up? What?? I can understand that being as young as you are you only have a short memory in terms of Bristol Citys history but this club IS progressing. It has already, after only being promoted nearly 2 years ago, established itself as a championship team and has plans of investing even more to help said progression. Enjoy the clubs current high Phil...instead of just singing when were winning.”

“Lee Johnson. Personally speaking I feel he's the most over-rated player we've had at City in a VERY long time.
Doesn't Tackle, Barely Scores, Weak on the Ball, Constantly Looses Position, Dreadful at Set Pieces and Passing his strongest quality is still very poor. Just look at Ipswich when more "messing around" from Johnson in the area resulted in a Pen for Ipswich and 2 more points dropped at home.
Lee Johnson is no better and no worse than a number of other players at the club. He's an average player simple as that.
What's inexcuseable though is that regardless of form, he's never dropped and keeps what I feel are better players out of the first 11 such as Noble and Gavin Williams, Nick Carle was sold for the reason that he would have kept Johnson out of the team. Neil Warnock said as much publically.
Personally I feel Lee Johnson and our lack of creativity from midfield has been on our weakness this season, with a midfield of him and Cole Skuse, we have no strength or fight in the Centre Midfield which has resulted in team after team carving us open.
If Gary Johnson can't see the problem and resolve it then I think it's likely that he could well take us down before he takes us up.
With some of his recent signings it's more than possible.”

“Dear Gary,
I know you profess to not read too much of forums and comments but I encourage you to read this one.
Very VERY well said!
I hope you know and realise there are only a very small number of supporters who criticise you, your selections, and in particular the playing of Lee.
Most of us are fully behind you and see the things that Lee offers that others don't.
Unfortunately to some people, unless you score a load of goals or put in 10 goal-saving tackles a game you're not worth your salt, but most know differently.
I know a few Yeovil fans, and they to a man have admitted that when you were both at Yeovil they used to criticise the fact that Lee was playing every week and accused you of nepotism there. They didn't believe he was worth his place in the team...and then he left. All now freely admit he's one of those players you don't necessarily notice, but when he's not there the team doesn't function as well without him, and they all wish they had him back.
Stick to your guns - as I'm sure you will.
Don't be put off by the minority of moaners and keep us moving forward as a club, as you have from day one.
Thanks Gary, and keep it up.
A Contented Robin”

“Whereas I agree that GJ knows more about football and he has done well, I still believe that for us to progress we need to clear out the deadwood like LJ, like McCallister, like McCombe. These players have taken us here but won't take us any further and that has been proven this season.
We should be looking to build a side with players like Maynard, Fontaine and Elliott. Those are the players that will take us towards the Prem- not unfortunately LJ.
And just because we are not as experienced as GJ doesn't mean we can't have an opinion on LJ and others. It is the booing of him at matches that is wrong IMO.”

“Well said Staple Hill Mike! City fans should remember where we were & which way we were heading before Gary Johnson arrived. We are now established in the Championship & with the addition of 3 or 4 quality players could make a serious push for the Premiership. Trust your manager-always believe!!”
