Bristol City assistant boss Millen believes Leicester victory can act as a springboard for success

Keith Millen believes Bristol City can take their Coca-Cola Championship show on the road with renewed confidence after beating Leicester 3-1 at the Walkers Stadium this week.

The Robins face another potentially hazardous assignment when they head to Yorkshire to take on Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday.

But assistant manager Millen insists the players will head north believing they can stage the kind of unbeaten run which propelled them into the play-off frame earlier in the season.

And he claims victory at Leicester will serve to alleviate some of the pressure which built up during a five-match sequence without a win.

"There seemed to be a lot of pressure coming from outside the club and we couldn't really understand why it was happening," said Millen.

"I know that we haven't been playing great and that results have not been too good, but we were still in a decent position knowing that we could do better.

"We try not to let the lads feel that pressure, because we want them to be confident.

"Beating Leicester not only gets us three points nearer the total we need, but also takes a little bit of that pressure off. It gives us something to build on going to Doncaster.

"We know we're capable of putting good runs together. We've also had bad runs in each of the last three seasons and there have been times when we've only won once in nine or 10 games, but we always know we can bounce back.

"Winning on Tuesday will give us the confidence to go on another good run and put ourselves in a decent position come January."

Bristol City's run of five games without a win brought pressure to bear on manager Gary Johnson, prompting his decision to not talk to the media this week.

Millen explained: "Gary felt the pressure coming from outside the club was unnecessary and felt the situation required a different voice.

"He wanted someone else to explain why we were not frustrated within the club and why we couldn't understand the reaction from outside. That's all it was. He's a happy man now and I'm sure he'll be talking again soon."

Johnson's decision to recall experienced right-back Bradley Orr, restore Cole Skuse to the centre of midfield and give Ivan Sproule his first start since September 15 paid dividends and, providing Jamie McAllister recovers from a badly gashed shin, it is difficult to see the manager changing things at Doncaster too much.

He will be without Dutch midfielder Evander Sno, however, who picked up his fifth booking of the season at Leicester and will serve a one-match ban.

Sproule scored a wonder goal to put City on course for victory and Skuse netted from 30 yards out and then made the third goal for Sno.

Millen said: "Goals change games and we're a different team when we score. You could see the confidence come flooding back when Ivan got that first goal.

"Playing a 4-5-1 formation with wide men was a tactic we thought could help us win the game against Leicester. We felt they would be fragile after losing 5-1 at Nottingham Forest and we didn't want to give them a leg-up at the start of the game.

"We set out to be nice and solid and to frustrate them. But we knew we also needed pace to counter-attack when we were on the ball. In that respect, things worked really well.

"Evander linked play up very well and then we had our three runners in Danny (Haynes), Nicky (Maynard) and Ivan to cause them problems.

"The lads showed a fantastic work-rate and we shouldn't let the goal they scored at the end detract from what was a very good performance."

    “Mr Canada

Firstly why on earth would I support Bristol City if I was born and raised in Wiltshire? I'm from South Bristol born and bred and moved away from the area for a a more rural life style and work. I hope that answer that one for you.

Just because you talk to your mates means absolutely nothing as you are then only airing thier opinons ,not yours. The truth is you only see a small fraction of the matches so only get a samll snapshot of the overall picture.

Ive been to 19 matches this season so feel Im in a pretty good position to comment-I will also be at Donny tomorrow so with all due respect it makes little or no sense that some bloke based in Canada is telling me I don't know what Im talking about. The Irony!

Just to finish I always smile and stop taking poeple seriously when they start repeating quotes that Johnson has made in the past. If you are going to have a dig at least have the minerals to think of your own insults and not just copy the massiah.”

“Interesting to see how Johnson reacted to a few home truths this week. He threw all his toys out the pram and refused to speak to the media. Refused to even entertain the fact he was in the wrong.
I think we all had a little insight into how he treats players whom he falls out with. I bet Messrs Noble, Trundle, Keogh etc have all been on the receiving end of this silent treatment when they have, at sometime or another, questioned the wisdom of Gary 'Im always right' Johnson.”

“Hi Marcus. Didn't see your last comment to me, as we're in a diffeerent time zone.

I live in Canada at the moment but still have made it to 8 matches this season. I watch the highlights of the matches and have several friends that go to the matches that tell me how things are going. I am also a Bristolian. Are you? Just asking, as you live in Wiltshire.

I am in a good position to have a relevent view and don't think i should 'keep my nose out', just becaiuse my view differs from yours.

It looks as though i am not on my own either.

Perhaps you should try having a balanced view. It's okay thinking you could manage the team better than the manager, but it isn't like playing FIFA 2010 you know.

    Perhaps be a little gracious...”

    Spot on as always.
Lasdt week it was "continuity" from GJ but I expect, after a win without JNR we will revert to rotation. Sno out , banned, who will replace him ???”

“Why can 't some people be gracious and give credit where credit is due.

Maybe the people at the club genuninely felt there was no viable alternative to playing Cole Skuse at right-back whilst Bradley Orr was out, and felt this formation played on Tuesday night wouldn't have worked without the excellent Skuse doing the running in the middle & protecting the back-four.

    Maybe, maybe, maybe”

    Eureka !!

Funniest thing Ive read for weeks.

Well done for changing it and guess what -I reckon playing with width week in week out could cause every team in this league problems....Not just Leicester.”
