Bristol needs another 30 people who can give some spare time to families with disabled children by providing short breaks.

As part of a national campaign for Share the Care Week, which starts today, Bristol City Council's Short Break Carers Service is appealing for volunteers who can work with disabled children in their spare time.

Cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Clare Campion-Smith, said: "Short breaks are one of the services most frequently requested by families with disabled children. Volunteers will be helping children gain independence, while their family has a break from the demands of caring for a disabled child. Carers will have a chance to build up a real and often long-lasting relationship with a family. We don't ask for any special qualifications except energy, time and enthusiasm."

Full training is available for all new carers, with ongoing advice, training and support packages. Carers are paid an allowance to cover expenses and placements can vary from a few hours a week to an overnight stay once a month.

Bernadette Yea, of Hengrove, cares for Brooke and Taylor, nine-year-old disabled twins, every other weekend. She said: "We get a lot of pleasure caring for the girls."
