Bristol Central strike gold in Scottish championships
Bristol Central's synchronised swimmers travelled to Glasgow for the Scottish National Championships last weekend and the squad of 11 brought home eight gold and 10 silver medals.
They clinched first place in the free team performance, beating rivals Trafford, after demonstrating a well-executed routine and original choreography.
Bristol missed out on the gold in the combination team by 0.001 of a mark after a routine which was original, but lacked the final execution of their competitors.
Coach and England talent development officer for synchro, Karen Thorpe said: "Bristol have progressed and developed their club over the past three years from 30 to now more than 70 athletes training regularly from the age of 7-19 years.
"Bristol has a history of producing world class Synchro swimmers, but the sport has always been small, and over recent years we've worked on broadening the base."
Thorpe added: "It is an honour to be one of the clubs recognised to become a 'Performance Club' and something I hope the city will be proud of."
Bristol's top performer last year, Anya Tarasuik, was missed at the Scottish Championships, but she is training with the GB squad in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics along with Bristol's Katie Dawkins who has been full-time training for the past three years at the High Performance Centre in Aldershot.
