A Bristol Army officer has taken part in a sports competition for artillery units in Germany.

Lieutenant Alexandra Amor, 24, from the Chew Valley, was part of a 12-man squad taking part in Exercise Sheldrake Gladiator, an event organised by Germany-based 1 (UK) Armoured Division, which combined military skills with sport.

Teams competed in shooting, navigation, command tasks and battle casualty treatment as well as six-a-side football, basketball, rugby sevens, hockey, golf and even a tug o' war.

Former Badminton School student Alex, who serves with 12th Regiment Royal Artillery, helped her team finish seventh overall.

Alex, who played for her team in the hockey contest, said: "The exercise was tough and physically demanding but also a lot of fun.

"It was a good chance to put into practice all the skills you are taught, especially leadership. I also liked the team building part of the exercise – you have to get on well and bond with your colleagues – you need to be able to trust them on operations."

Alex who has previously served in Iraq, Canada and Germany since becoming an officer in 2007, may be sent to Afghanistan in the future.

She said: "I always wanted to join the Army, I joined to lead and hope to have a full career and go as far as I can through the ranks."
