A man escaped without serious injuries after a crash near Bristol Airport because he was in a left-hand drive car.

Ambulance crews who attended the incident on the A38 at Redhill believe the man in his 40s or 50s could have sustained worse injuries if he was sitting in the right-hand side of the car.

The collision between the black Audi A4 and a blue Volkswagen Passat happened at Cowslip Green at about 8.50am yesterday.

The driver of the Audi was trapped in his vehicle following the collision and had to be freed by fire crews.

He was complaining of neck pain following the incident but a doctor from Great Western Air Ambulance checked him over and confirmed that his injuries were not life-threatening. The man was then taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary by a Great Western Ambulance (GWAS) crew.

The driver of the other vehicle was assessed by paramedics on scene and did not need to go to hospital.

“George, Chris, DCI Hunt has said, albeit blunter, what I was going to say. Safe to say though, that people like you two 'Walts' ALWAYS give us a chuckle with your 'expertise'!

(For 'expertise' read: 'First Aid at Work certificate makes me think I'm a Paramedic').”

“I have often driven over to England in a left hand drive car and found it very easy todrive in the city as the parked cars are right next to the driving position. The only problem was lorries on a normal road as I had to lean over to see if it was clear.Otherwise ,no problem.”

“It appears from the picture that if the driver had been sitting in the back seat of the car, he might have escaped injury altogether?

    There's a road-safety improvement idea here somewhere.”

“What I'd like to know is if driving a left hand drive car actually contributed to this accident in the first place”

“The 'emergency services' come up with some blinders. How an ambulance driver/medic know this? It's speculation at best.”

    “Ditto JG.
The BEP (and they are not alone) will find any tentative link. Football stories can be about a player who was once 'linked' to Bristol City (just press speculation) but every time a story appears about this player it mentions 'one-time City target'.
Spitting Image (remember that) did something like this...

'Plane Crash somewhere in the world - one Briton injured. We don't care about the other 150 odd passengers 'cos they're not British'.”

“The Evening Post have some strange way of reporting..

The man did not die, because his car was left-hand drive?

Or was it because the main impact of the collision was on the other side of the car?”
