Bristol Academy out to overhaul Carnegie in season run-in
Bristol Academy play their penultimate home game of the season this weekend knowing they can still overhaul visitors Leeds Carnegie in the National Division of the FA Premier League.
The Yorkshire club, who held the Academy to a 1-1 draw last September, lie five points ahead of Bristol going into Sunday's clash at Oaklands Park but have played two games more.
Gary Green's side know a victory would put them on target to beat the top eight finish the coach set as the minimum requirement for his side this term.
Fears that the top level of the women's game could be thrown into turmoil next season by the establishment of an eight-team women's super league – with no promotion or relegation – have been eased after the FA put the plans on indefinite hold in light of the financial downturn.
The Academy have what looks their toughest game of the season at title favourites Everton next weekend before rounding their campaign off with a winnable clash against Blackburn Rovers at Mangotsfield United's ground on April 26.
They went down 3-0 at champions Arsenal last weekend, although the Gunners needed spot kicks from Kim Little and Suzanne Grant, either side of a long-range free kick from Katie Chapman, to secure the win.
Southern Division leaders Millwall maintained their promotion push with Ann Marie Heatherson's late goal clinching a 1-0 win over Keynsham Town, who travel to West Ham this weekend. Gemma Summers bagged her 27th goal of the season to help Oldland Abbotonians come from behind and claim a 2-1 win over Weston St Johns Reserves in Division One (North) of the SW Women's League. Oldland's other goal came from Vicky Mundy, who normally plays in central defence but had been pushed up front on her own.
Trudy Hammond's double sparked a Bristol & West fightback against Dursley in Division One of the Gloucestershire County Women's League, but it wasn't enough to save them from a 4-2 defeat. Yate Town went down 6-3 at home to Newent.
In Division Two, Bitton were only able to field 10 players in their 2-0 defeat at Forest of Dean.
Bitton are looking for players in all positions to bolster their ranks next season and anyone interested can contact Jones on 07881 504358.
