Bristol City Council will decide tonight whether to approve the city's bid to become a host venue for the 2018 World Cup.

The cabinet meeting, which begins at 7pm at the Council House, College Green, is open to the public and you can also watch it live on this website.

The Evening Post understands there is support from all party leaders for the bid, which could see the local economy benefit to the tune of £150 million if successful, according to an independent report commissioned by the Football Association.

This would mean the bid team journeying to Wembley on Thursday to present Bristol's case to the England 2018 team and Bristol hosting at least four games at a proposed new stadium in Ashton Vale.

The cost of host city status is expected to be £17 million.

If the bid is accepted by the council, then BCC will pay £250,000 in marketing costs towards England's bid and about £100,000 to fund the city's project team in the run-up to FIFA's decision next year on which countries will host the tournament in 2018 and 2022.

    “NO NO NO
When will the crazed spenders on Bristol CC stop.
All the costs load Bristol's already overburdened Council Taxpayers; while the alleged benefits go to shops, bars etc., mostly owned by non-Bristolians but anyway putting almost nothing back into the City.

When will this wretched Council set up a
"Dept. of NOT SPENDING OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY"”
