This is Bristol

T he photo of the Queen walking Prince Andrew in his carriage pram brought back memories for me too as I owned a Silver Cross pram just like it for my first child back in 1954.

They were beautiful prams, mine was navy blue coach-built with a cream padded interior. The carriage springing made it float along so it was a joy to push. I once walked with it from Downend into Bristol.

We didn't have cars back then and you could safely leave your baby in his pram outside a shop while you did your shopping. I was the third owner of my Silver Cross and it was still like new. I hope somewhere it is still being used and loved.

As your previous high pram owners wrote, they are not really practical for today's busy families but I've often thought that modern prams are badly designed for babies facing forward into the wind and unable to see and interact with their mums.

The three-wheeler jogging pram may be ideal for toddlers and their mum and dad but perhaps our experience could influence a "turn around" in pram design to benefit both mum and baby.
