YEOVIL Town boss Terry Skiverton refused to be disappointed with a 2-0 defeat against Coca-Cola Championship side Derby County in Tuesday's friendly at Huish Park. Two late strikes from the Rams proved Yeovil's undoing.

Skiverton said: "I was really pleased. I thought the patterns and the way we were trying to play and have been working on in training looked really good.

"We created a few chances, got a in a few good crossing areas and if we had been a little bit more ruthless it would have been a different game."

Derby started brightly and took little time to test Reading trialist Alex McCarthy in the Yeovil goal, drawing a save after five minutes. Luke Varney, County's loan striker, hovered on the edge of the box before firing in a low shot that was palmed away by McCarthy, diving to his left.

The Glovers' best chance of the half came when Keiran Murtagh's 25-yard drive was saved by Stephen Bywater.

Three minutes into the second period the game sparked into life as the slippery Sam Williams was tripped in the box by Jay McEveley.

The former Aston Villa striker – who signed a two-year contract a few hours before game – took the spot-kick but had his effort stopped by Bywater.

Skiverton said: "When we get penalties we have got to be more ruthless as that could cost us in the long run."

The Rams eventually broke the deadlock after 73 minutes. Substitute Danny Hutchins gave away a penalty, blocking with his arm Lee Croft's cross. Steve Davies failed to make the same error as Williams, sending Yeovil's replacement keeper Richard Martin the wrong way.

Varney nearly doubled his side's advantage shortly afterwards, hitting the goal-frame following a superb turn and shot ten yards from goal.

County's second did come after 79 minutes, when Davies climbed highest to head home Ben Pringle's free-kick.

Skiverton said his team matched Derby – but he was unhappy with the performance of the match officials. He believed the Glovers should have had a second penalty when substitute Danny Schofield was felled in the box.

Skiverton said: "I am disappointed and I do not really want to get off to a bad start with officials.

"I know with the Danny Schofield one, their lad has got a toe on it and it went for a corner but when someone dangles their leg in the box like that and someone goes right over the top of it you wonder.

"I thought the (Derby) penalty was a little bit harsh. There was a back-pass which the goalkeeper tipped away for a corner – it looked like an indirect free-kick.

"You start thinking to yourself 'What is happening here, is this because we are little old Yeovil?'.

"I am really upset by that tonight and the way that some people conduct themselves when we are up against bigger clubs."
