BORIS Johnson – Mayor of London and one of the best-known politicians in the country – was verbally attacked by a group of protestors as he arrived in Bristol.

The affable old Etonian, currently enjoying a second term as London mayor, is visiting the city to offer his support to both the Tory candidate in the Bristol mayoral election Geoff Gollop, and Ken Maddock, the Conservative candidate for Police Commissioner.

But shortly after emerging from the M shed, where he had met the two candidates, he was attacked by a group of a dozen protestors, who hurled abuse at him and told him he was “not welcome in Bristol”.

Boris retorted, with trademark cheerfulness: “Well you’re very welcome in London,” but later referred to the protestors as “a bunch of crusties who probably don’t represent the views of the vast majority of Bristolians.”

Boris attempted to carry out a harbourside press conference, flanked by the two candidates – who both looked nervous about the descending situation – but the initial boos, jeers and shouts of “who owns the Bank of England Boris?”, descended into a more grizzly torrent of verbal abuse.

The protestors – some of whom are believed to have been involved in last year’s Occupy Bristol movement – began to use the most offensive kinds of swearing, while snarling angrily close to Boris’ seemingly unflappable face.

But with scores of young families milling around the Harbourside in half term week, the Mayor of London, who had at first tried to start a conversation with the protestors, began to lose his temper – finally shouting “bog off!” as he retreated to the nearby Art Warehouse cafe.

“Some times I get to wondering ......how come there were enough hecklers around to make such a story. It could almost have been a Tory/Boris stunt to get the PR. It certainly got more attention than anything else Boris did in Bristol that day.”

“Bristol is a rebel city with a rebellious history. A fact for which most Bristolians are mightily proud.
    Long may it continue.”

Well put, sir. In fact, Boris has been successful by carrying on Ken Livingstone's "Loony Marxist" policies. Curious, or what?”

“He's a buffoon. Albeit a well connected one.

People like him because he can bumble on about "whiff whaff" and look funny getting stuck on a zip line, but I ask you this. .... is funny really his remit?”

“An embarrassment to Bristol. A city's image is formed by how it makes the headlines, positively and negatively. What with this and the recent torching of Tesco, one would be left to think that Bristol is run by facebook lynch mobs. What next for these left-wing facists and their ugly prejudices? Burning books with content they disagree with? And the girl chides Boris for his posh suit. Boris may be many things, but well-dressed he ain't. From her outpouring of hate, scruffy certainly doesn't equate to the moral high ground.”

“@DennisB2012 BoJo is a numpty, though a very clever and massively ambitious one, (that actually does make sense). Nationally he is currently riding the crest of a wave for a brilliant London Olympics, which is something he didn't start and really owes other people for delivering - never the less it's true that as mayor he didn't screw up; he spent millions on removing bendy buses and the reintroduction of a modern route master bus (at present the No.73 from Victoria station to Stoke Newington); scrapped an extension to the congestion charge zone (but left the original zone Ken Livingstone introduced) and is a keen cyclist but "Boris bikes", the bicycle scheme, was actually the brain child of Ken Livingston, though BoJo was mayor when they were introduced. BoJo is, of course, a celeb' and it's sad that in Britain's celeb' obsessed culture, a weak story about a few comments he got on a day trip to Bristol has produced many more comments than one about the Severn Barrage, as being pushed by Peter Hain, which could damage the port of Bristol and Bristol economically, which was a story in the Post at the same time.”

“I'm not sure I go along with the near myth that Boris has done a great job for London.

What he has done may be reasonably OK - even if it cost more or has not used by as many people as he claimed it would be. But what about all those other things he said he would do when he was elected but has yet to deliver on.....

Remember, people in Bristol do not live in London and do not actually experience the results of Boris - we only hear what the media tell us!”

“Heckling aside, what happenned to the new mayor and Police Comminssioner being non political. We have had more Conservative financed paperwork shoved through our door this week than we had at the last general election. There is a desperation to instal Party backed Police Commissioneress countrywide and to think they will not be influenced by their financial backers is foolish. Boris may be an okat kind of chap but party backing sould be banned from these elections and for an independent Mayor and Police Chief, party backing should have been banned and people stand on their own two feet to prove what they have to offer, not their party masters.”

    “@ Spiggett

"Is this written by a Journalist?"

Is anything on this site. nowadays? Still, they must have been quite proud of this effort, because they've repeated word-for-word with a bit more padding this morning, http://tinyurl.com/bujbq66 They're not even waiting a few days to recycle stories now!

Anyway, Boris - no, I'm not a Tory either, but I do like him. He works hard for London, all of it, not only the rich bit, just as any mayor should. And yes, these crusties are the type of people who'd heckle anyone that they perceive to be different from them, ie people that actually contribute to society and respect the rights of others to hold opinions differing from theirs, rather than spending their days self-righteously ranting and looking for "fascists".”
